A police officer who dropped off his daughter at her Phoenix elementary school was asked by the school’s principal not to wear his uniform to the school because other parents were concerned that he was carrying a gun, MyFoxPhoenix.com reported.
A district spokeswoman told the station that “some parents” voiced concern about seeing a fully armed police officer on the school’s campus. The spokeswoman apologized that Urkov perhaps took the discussion the wrong way.

My wife and I don’t have kids but for those here who do, when you drop off your kids at the school, do you actually get out of the car and walk them to their classroom?
Depends on school policy, the age of the child, and the parents. My pre-K children get walked into their class, my K and 2nd Grader get walked to the school door, my 4th Grader gets watched by my wife or I getting onto the bus.
“Some parents” need to get their heads out of their fourth point of contact. I personally wouldn’t have a problem with a SWAT member dropping his children off in full gear. Heck, I’d love it if police stations or sub-stations were always built right next door to schools.
Good question. I homeschooled my kids so I can’t answer.
I think “some parents” need to get a grip. He’s one of the good guys, for goodness sakes!
It sounds like the school needs to do a little education. I could see children coming home reporting that there was a “man with a gun” at school, and the parents panicking because they didn’t know he was a police officer. Maybe ask him or the police station to explain their job at a school assembly?

For my kids, even up to 8th grade, if we dropped them off outside of specific “car line” times, we were supposed to walk them to the classroom.
FWIW, we had parents who were police officers and active duty military and I always thought it was great for the kids to see parents in uniform.
I agree with the school. With all of the recent school shootings if I saw a uniformed police officer walking around my heart would drop. It could scare the kids too.

Should all health care professionals be asked not to drop off their children at school if they are in scrubs because little Ashley or Tyson got freaked out at the doctor’s office when they got immunizations or stitches and we can’t have any health care people scaring the children, now can we? Should we also ban the cops from going into the market just in case someone might also be stopping by with the child and it might scare the child to see a cop in the store?
Did it occur to you that seeing a patrol car or a uniformed officer in the school might indicate he or she has a child that attends school there? Paranoia has finally overridden common sense in America!

Agree with DarkLight- elementary school needs an assembly with police. Throw in the fire department and the paramedics for good measure. Make it an education about safety day.
This is his regular clothes to wear to work. If they don’t want him to wear them then they should also prohibit health care workers from coming in scubs, military from coming in uniform and scouts from wearing uniforms too.
When I was in high school, the admin tried to tell my father he couldn’t come to meetings in uniform - he was active duty military. He just smiled and ignored her. The dad in the OP should do the same. If the principal tried to enforce this she would lose and just look stupider than she does already.
I see no problems with wearing a police officer uniform to school.
Any school aged child should be able to recognize an in uniform police officer.
They even sing about it on Sesame Street.

One possible rationale that just popped into my head is, what if a nutcase dressed up like a cop to gain entry to the school, and past security?:shrug:

Great idea! I wish they did do it that way. Speaking of police stations and criminals. A smart thing to do with your GPS is to set your “Home” location address as the address of the police station because often criminals will steal your car and then go to your house using your GPS knowing that since they had just stolen your car that you won’t be at home.
