Can I get married in a Catholic church without a marriage license? The reason I ask is because they require you to have your original birth certificate in order to get a marriage license and my fiance’s original birth certificate is not available. Can we still go through and have our marriage blessed by the Church even if it it’s not a legal marriage? After all, all we need is to be married in God’s eyes, right?
So far as I am aware, no, you cannot get married in a Catholic church, at least in the United States, without a valid marriage license. Rather than attempting to marry illegally, what you and your fiance should be doing is inquiring of civil authorities how he can apply for a delayed certificate of birth to be issued. People do this all the time when the original birth certificate has been lost or destroyed.
