My wife and I had a discussion about the denial of Communion to public supporters of abortion. If a Catholic is denied Communion, does he lose his salvation?
Denial of Communion is a disciplinary measure – one might even say a medicinal measure – intended prevent a Catholic from losing his salvation by jolting him to awareness of the fact that he is not in fit condition to receive Communion and should seek reconciliation with the Church and with God. Once he is properly reconciled, he is in a state of grace and may again receive Communion. Only if he dies unrepentant of mortal sin does he lose his salvation.
