Donald Trump suspends travel to the US from Europe for 30 days to limit coronavirus spread
Speaking from the Oval Office, the US president declared the suspension of travel would begin on Friday. Trump also said talks were in place with insurance companies to drop co-pays for COVID–19 testing.
Well, I am sure glad that Trump is protecting the borders now that the coronavirus is all over the US. I’m sure this is going to calm the market. There goes an 11-year bull market.
So the White House have clarified…it’s only a ban for European countries in the Schengen Area (those with open border agreements). Although I am not sure why, because the virus is spreading in the UK and other non-Schengen countries too.
Personal story, a 70 year old man I know is planning to fly from Atlanta to London Friday night. A group of us have been asking him for 2 weeks to cancel because of him being higher risk and not knowing if he could find himself unable to return home. Since at his age he risk death we think an abundance of caution is necessary. But he is determined to go anyway.
There are not many good answers here that will stave off inevitable problems. There can be bad decisions that exacerbate. The criticism of Trump here remains in HOW he does and to a lesser extent, what he does. In fact Schumer lifted political consequences from Trump by asking for a much larger sum than Trump asked for. Trump might have wanted more, but was given cover of asking for less. In real crisis that goes unnoticed.
In good times, his self centeredness and vanity is distasteful, but it does not defeat effectiveness.( Although it kept him in the 40s I think for 3 years now when any other president would be in the high 50s or better. )
Inevitably president’s face bad things. This is when confidence in motive, comfort in the president’s empathy, and consistency matters. It cannot be counted like beans, but it is certainly there.
Anybody planning to fly to the US may well run into travel insurance problems - Insurers seem to be getting rather restless on health and disruption costs.
First reaction I had when I saw that the travel ban had European exceptions was," bet the exceptions correspond to making Trump properties the only game in town."
Patterns like that are like clockwork in life when you recognise the pattern.
Sure enough, woke up and read a story that tracks where you can go as coincidentally corresponding to Trump properties.
Funny thing is you know Trump already has staff ready to meet this criticism.
Based on how Trump rolls out that defense, the question becomes, why was he prepared with that response?

The TRUMP is a victim crowd goes in motion. Fox has much " tisking" and outraged faces.
But Trump did business for the purse no doubt
The Black Death spread across Eurasia at a time when going to the neighboring village was the longest travel most people would do. Smallpox spread among Amerindian populations after it was introduced by early European explorers.
We’re certainly better at dealing with contagious diseases than our ancestors, but the idea that stopping flights, when the virus is already within your borders, and the number of community cases is rising, and testing has been sporadic at best, seems to be a very literal example of closing the barn door after the cows have come home.
Here are the things the president did not do in that speech.
He offered no guidance or policy on how to prevent the spread of the disease inside the United States. Should your town cancel its St. Patrick’s Day parade? What about theatrical productions and sporting events? Classes at schools and colleges? Nothing.
Why are States and localities incapable of doing this? That is the appropriate level of Government to make these decisions. In fact, they have been. People have been calling Trump a Dictator for years but now its he is not using his power enough? Its incoherent.
He offered no explanation of what went wrong with the U.S. testing system, nor any assurance of when testing would become more widely available. His own previous promises of testing for anyone who needs it have been exploded as false. So what is true? Nothing.
Trump can only go on what the experts at the CDC and the like are telling him. Aren’t we supposed to be listing to the experts? now i guess Trump is supposed to go off on his own and ignore theses experts? more incoherence
Layoffs are coming, probably on a very large scale, as travel collapses and people hunker down at home. Any word for those about to lose their jobs? Only the vaguest indication that something might be announced sometime soon
What is the president supposed to announce? Nobody wants people to lose their job but we do have unemployment for people that do.
I do not get why people seem to believe we cannot function without top down direction coming from the federal government and especially out of the presidents mouth. That type of top down ordering is what happens in China and they screwed up the initial response to this whole thing.
.
I can’t find any text explaining the restricted travel. A delta reservation person has as much information as I do. Are the specifics spelled out anywhere or is this a bit like the Muslim band in that people find out the details of the restrictions as they run into them?
