Green card holder sentenced for imaginary voter fraud in Texas

"A permanent U.S. resident living in Texas has been sentenced to eight years in prison for illegally voting, a punishment that will probably result in the woman’s deportation after she completes her sentence.

On Wednesday, a Tarrant County, Tex., jury convicted 37-year-old Rosa Maria Ortega on two felony charges of illegal voting, for casting a ballot as a noncitizen in 2012 and 2014. Ortega is a green-card holder who was brought to the United States from Mexico when she was an infant, her attorney said.

The decision was hailed by some — including Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton (R), who prosecuted the case — as a sign the state intends to crack down on voter fraud."

8 years???

Mexican citizen sentenced for illegal voting. bit.ly/2lA5Hno

And?

8 years per offense is a lot IMO, but you do the crime, you pay the time. No sympathy here.

Yeah, 8 years is a lot. But there’s no excuse for illegal voting, no matter how long you’ve been here.

8 years seems extremely harsh.

Agree on both points but that sentence does fall within the guide lines. What I wonder about is a state like California who has handed out over 600,000 drivers licenses to illegals and also allows people to register to vote by using their license. Trump’s claim of 3 - 3.5 million votes cast illegally doesn’t sound quite so far fetched now.

She got skrewed. She should sue Eric Holder for tortious interference.

There were other circumstances. She had been previously denied voter registration so she reapplied and lied about her status. This was after successful voting illegally when living at a different address. It wasn’t just a case of getting caught up in the moment and showing up to vote. She planned this fraud for a long time and took considerable pains to carry it out.

And now she can be deported as a convicted felon who is not a citizen.

If she came here as an infant and is now 37 years old, she had more than enough time to apply for citizenship if she wanted to vote. It is hard for me to blame anyone but her for this.

I was going to say, “I thought she had been brought over when she was 14”, but that was the Guadalupe Garcia case, who had a 2009 conviction of identity theft for a fake SS card and was recently deported.

I realize that the thread title is supposed to match the news item headline, but “imaginary”? Really"

They should have put imaginary in quotes like you did.

Or the OP could have looked for this story on a real news site. Hotair dot com? Really?

Yes, I thought this was the story… Which is it? Seemed funny she sort of gave herself up like maybe she and some backers wanted it to be the next biggest story…??? Just me thinking.

Eight years total - not per offense.

Don’t like the message, attack the messenger…

Would have preferred if it came from FOX?

The story is for real, but the bias of the “messenger” was revealed in the slanting of the headline with the false word “imaginary”. This story is all over the news; the OP could have picked a version from any one of several bona fide news sources.
