I just bought a Lord Prayer Candle from Dollar tree. There were also other prayer candles like the Sacred Heart of Jesus and I was wondering what is the proper way to use them? Should I have gotten all the different prayer candles? I’m not catholic and I’m not even sure if this is a catholic thing but I tried web searching it and couldn’t find anything.
People light a candle while praying. Or in memory of someone.
It symbolizes our prayers going up to heaven.
Simple.
But does each candle have a certain prayer you are supposed to say? And should you get all of them?
For example I have the Lord Prayer and Guardian Angel candle so do I say a specific prayer when I light each and do I blow each out after I say the prayer? And is it weird to have only those two and not the others? Thanks
Do you know the Lords Prayer?
Matthew 6:9-13 New International Version (NIV)
9 “This, then, is how you should pray:
“‘Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
10 your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
11 Give us today our daily bread.
12 And forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
13 And lead us not into temptation,[a]
but deliver us from the evil one.
That’s a good prayer to start with. Memorise it.
Psalm 18:28 For thou wilt light my candle:
the Lord my God will enlighten my darkness.
Matthew 5:15
Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel,
but on a candlestick;
and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.
Proverbs 24:20
For there shall be no reward to the evil man;
the candle of the wicked shall be put out.
The candles are not blessed, nor are they magical.
It’s a traditional way of praying, Say any prayer you like, they’re not a set. People buy the one with the picture they like the most.
Rose’s idea would be best.
Light them in front of the crucifix and/or icon in front of which you pray. Or if you have like a small home altar.
Then pray in front of them.
The light and the fire also symbolizes God because He showed Himself like a fire in front of Moses. It also symbolizes our burning hearts in adoration of God.
May God bless your prayers in front of your candles.
I found this small prayer to be said as you light your candle up:
Most Holy and High Trinity, receive my love before Thee and burn with Your Godly fire my iniquities and erase all my mistakes, O, Lord, give them to your forgiveness and burial. Amen.
Most Holy Mother of God, make the light of my gift be well received by your Son and our God, for the forgiveness of our sins. Amen.
Don’t put it out. Let it burn until it’s consumed.
Er, those cheap grocery store candles SHOULD NOT EVER BE LEFT TO BURN all the way down.
The glass is not meant to withstand that, and the wax is not super high quality either.
OP, be very careful. Leave it lit while praying, but it’s perfectly acceptable to blow these home use candles out.
Candles, their containers, and the receptacles for oil in Churches are made for that long burn.
Those are a completely different product and are safety rated.
I have an Immaculate Heart and St. Michael flanking the cross below the Sacred Heart portrait on my mantle…most recently with palm sunday crosses on the ends. But I pray for the intercession of the Archangel and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, and venerate the Sacred Heart of Christ all the time anyway without them. I’d say if you do pray specific prayers on the candles, just admit it’s more for you BUT God could have led you to it, so use it for your spiritual growth! : ) I used to do that with a St. Jude one.
