I assume you are talking about a husband & wife. I was taught in Catholic school that intercourse must complete in the vagina.
An Encyclopedia of the Catholic Church may have more specifics.

Accidentally? No; it was an accident, which means it was unintended.

Intentionally? Yes. Period.

I think what the OP was getting at is more WHY is it a sin?

There’s the whole Onan thing, but interpreting that as a missive against ejaculating seems sort of ridiculous – It seems much more likely that God was mad at Onan for going against a direct order from God, or for enjoying the benefits of having sex with his sister-in-law without giving her the possibility of children from it, which was the whole reason they were supposed to be having sex. It always struck me as much more about not violating social contracts than about sperm…

Plus, how can it be a sin for a man to waste seed when women lose eggs all the time?

Is there any other biblical basis for this idea? And what about men who are being tested for fertility issues? How are they supposed to give a sperm sample if it’s a sin to masturbate and a sin to ejaculate in a cup? Or does that get some sort of medical exemption the way The Pill does for hormonal disorders?

I think that was answered clearly above.

It is not a sin if it were accidental. It is a sin if it were intentional.

If it were intentional it would be just like masturbation and that is not a nice thing.

What you think is ridiculous may be very serious to God. In this case Onan’s immortal soul was in danger.

Because that is a normal bodily function for women.

Masturbation is not actually socially accepted as normal…unless you want to climb up in the trees with the chimps and have a contest…?

Before we get “biblical” let’s get logical…OK?

For men who need a sperm sample medically there is a prostrate massage. That eliminates the need to masturbate.

For women there are many drugs to control hormone disorders.

For health/ medical reasons…a lot of things are OK.

Its a sin of grave matter and if the man knows this then he is committing a mortal sin.

“Prostrate massage?”

To paraphrase Inigo Montoya, “People keep using that word. I do not think it means what they think it means.”

There is also the “Catholic condom,” an ordinary condom with a slit cut in the end, allowing some semen to escape (and thus preserving the possibility of the passing on of life in intercourse), while trapping enough of the semen to allow for testing.

You realize that a prostate massage is just somebody else masturbating you, right? It still creates sexual pleasure, erection and ejaculation. In fact, I’m pretty sure it’s actually supposed to feel even better than the regular thing …

A prostrate massage (getting a rubdown while lying face-down on the table) would be rather pleasant. A prostate massage . . . see below.

I am a geezer with an enlarged prostate, and I get a digital rectal prostate exam every six month from my urologist. It can cause some semen leakage, if the examiner presses hard enough, but it does NOT create erection, nor does it create sexual pleasure. Quite the contrary – it hurts like aitch ee double-hockey-sticks.

Edit: People who don’t know the difference between “prostate” and “prostrate” shouldn’t be commenting. But then, people who don’t know the difference, don’t know that they don’t know the difference . . . :rolleyes:

I’m guessing the way they do a prostate exam and the way they do a prostate massage aren’t exactly the same thing …
