Padre Pio Three Days of Darkness?

Could someone explain to me what Padre Pio’s “Three Days of Darkness” is? Where did this come from?

The internet rumor factory has attributed all kinds of spurious quotations to Padre Pio. The three days of darkness might be one of these.

Yes, there is a YouTube video about this topic that will scare you to death. I don’t recall Padre Pio ever giving that much detail about this topic.

Wow, this Three Days of Darkness stuff really has a way of mutating. First, St. Malachy, then St. Pio. Before long, it will probably mutate into something St. Paul VI said.

Don’t rack your brains over this Three Days of Darkness stuff. It has no foundation on Scripture or Sacred Tradition. Meditate on this Sunday’s (Advent I) Gospel instead. I think that has greater value than this Three Days of Darkness stuff.

I said stuff three times, because really, that’s all it is. If only people spent their energy on studying Scripture over worrying about the Three Days of Darkness. Stuff.

It’s never been proven that Padre Pio spoke about the Three Days of Darkness. I highly recommend this book concerning the subject.

Although I agree with this, I sometimes wonder if Isaiah 26:20 could possibly be alluding to it–although it says nothing about darkness.
“Go, my people, enter your rooms and shut your doors behind you. Hide yourselves a little while until the wrath has passed. For behold, the Lord is coming out of His dwelling to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity.”

The Bible does say this about supernatural darkness:

Revelation 9:2
He opened the bottomless pit, and smoke went up out of the pit, like the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by the smoke of the pit.

Jeremiah 4:28
“For this the earth shall mourn and the heavens above be dark, Because I have spoken, I have purposed, And I will not change My mind, nor will I turn from it.”

Amos 8:9
“It will come about in that day,” declares the Lord GOD, “That I will make the sun go down at noon and make the earth dark in broad daylight.”

Matthew 24:29
“But immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give it’s light, and the stars will fall from the sky, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken.”

Acts 2:20
The sun will become dark, and the moon turn to blood, before the coming of the great and glorious Day of the Lord.

You forgot Exodus 10:22, where darkness that lasted three days was one of the ten plagues put onto Egypt.

One of the consistent themes of Jewish Messianic prophecy, and of Christian eschatological prophecy, is that there will be similarities between the bad stuff that happens at the end of the world, and the ten plagues of Exodus. The implication is that the bad stuff is a call to repentance and conversion, primarily for pagans and unbelievers but also for Christians who have fallen away and unconverted Jews. The wider theme is that the end of the world and the appearance of a new or remade earth, is a sort of new exodus into the ultimate Promised Land.

So of course it probably will happen, but not in the weird ways that a lot of modern people talk about it.

Private revelation, not binding on any of us.

I forgot about that. The plagues could prefigure the tribulation at the end of days.

As far as I know Padre Pio never spoke about the three days of darkness.

It certainly was not his idea or prophesy, it came from elsewhere.

Honestly, I’ve seen this three days of darkness story attached to the Fatima message, to other saints and so on, so…
I pay zero to no attention to it.
