I think this might be tilting at windmills, but I wouldn’t mind seeing children’s TV a bit more educational and a little comprised of creepy little characters that don’t ever really seem to do anything. However, it’s good to see Poland’s government is ensuring that inapporiate matters like homosexuality, which have no place in schools, remain outside.
I believe they do have gender – Tinky Winky and Dipsy are boys, and LaLa and Po are girls – but they are just babies!
If a real-life 18 month old boy saw a handbag, picked it up, and carried it around a while, would anyone automatically assume he was gay? At that age, isn’t the handbag just one more brightly-colored object to be curious about? Who, at that age, knows or cares that they are hetero- or homosexual?
(I think Boobah is weirder than Teletubbies – they look like Teletubbies on a drug trip  )
Apparently the issue is over a ‘male’ character using a handbag. While this was probably not the intention of the program producer (I doubt toddlers would understand such a message, even if it were symbolically present) it is understandable why fundamentalist and extremely conservative evangelicals got up in arms about it (as they tend to see a great deal of modern culture as anti-Christian).
