Religious Latin Phrases

Since I recently attended a Latin Mass, I have been studying religious Latin phrases.

I like Beata Virgo Maria {Blessed Virgin Mary} and dirge nos Domine {Direct us, O Lord}.

What religious Latin phrase(s) do you like?

Its more than just phrases; its the Latin language.

Parce me domine (Spare me, O Lord).
-------- aut ---------
Parce nos domine (Spare us, O Lord).

Ad Jesum per Mariam
Ora et Labora

Pax Christi!

I can’t think of any…

God bless.

I like
Ad maiorem Dei gloriam To the greater glory of God. This is of course the motto of the Jesuits, one of the greatest of our Orders.
I was taught, by the Christian Brothers, may forgiveness be theirs, to put it on the top of all my worksheets. I have done so privately in any work I produce throughout all my working life.
It should be the inspiration of every breath we take.

Some of my favorites have already been mentioned in this thread, but one that hasn’t is the following short prayer by St Louis de Monfort:

"Totus tuus ego sum, et omnia mea tua sunt. Accipio te in mea omnia. Praebe mihi cor tuum, Maria. "

How about “Domine non sum dignus ut intres sub tectum meum, sed tantum dic verbo et sanabitur anima mea”, “Lord I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed.” The priest says it for the congregation at our EF church, but when I go to other EF churches I actually get to say it (three times even!)

I also like the Agnus Dei instead of Lamb of God. I first heard it sung at a more traditional OF Mass and I really wanted to learn it because it sounded so neat. And “lex orandi lex credendi” is another favorite of mine.

Salus Animarum Suprema Lex - Pope Saint Pius X

The salvation of souls is the highest law.

Caritas Christi urget nos! - Saint Vincent Pallotti

The charity of Christ urges us!

I have a couple of favorites.

Pax Domini sit semper vobiscum (The peace of the Lord be with you all)

and , as shown in my sig line, what I (along with St. Thomas) fully intend to say when I meet Our Blessed Lord Jesus Christ (and traditionally an personal aspiration at the elevation during Mass)
Dominus meus et Deus meus. (My Lord and my God.)

Cousin James likes:

Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa

Domine non sum dignus.

Perhaps because it’s said aloud and repeatedly.

Dei Gratia, (By the grace of God.)

Deo volente! (God willing)

Deus vult! (God wills it)

I like in particular the phrase the priest says in Tridentine Mass when blessing every communicant with the Sacred Host:

“Corpus Domini nostri Jesu Christi custodiat animam tuam in vitam aeternam. Amen.”

 loving this thread

HB11, Thank you for this very kind statement.

:tiphat::tiphat::tiphat:

I like Deo et regi fidelis {Faithful to God and king}.

I really don’t have any favorites Latin phrases. I do love the prayer
Anima Criste in latin

ANIMA Christi, sanctifica me.
Corpus Christi, salva me.
Sanguis Christi, inebria me.
Aqua lateris Christi, lava me.
Passio Christi, conforta me.
O bone Iesu, exaudi me.
Intra tua vulnera absconde me.
Ne permittas me separari a te.
Ab hoste maligno defende me.
In hora mortis meae voca me.
Et iube me venire ad te,
Ut cum Sanctis tuis laudem te
in saecula saeculorum.

Amen.

Good God, even now as Im typing Im getting goose bumps. That’s how much I like this prayer.

Peace

jesus g

The more I hear in Latin, the more I love it. Eventually I’d love to at least be fluent in the Latin that is used for the liturgy, as well as all the prayers.

I love some of the ‘popular’ prayers in Latin (Our Father, Hail Mary, ect).

I’m trying to learn these prayers, and with that in mind I had someone speak them in Latin, and then make a video that shows the words in Latin and English as they are spoken.

I’ve found it very helpful!

If you’re interested, I’ve only got the Our Father done so far:
stompingcrows.com/our-father-in-latin-pater-noster/

I’ve got the audio for the Hail Mary, Glory Be and the Sign of the Cross, and will be putting videos up this weekend.

I want to continue having these made, so I’ll be bookmarking this thread to come back and get ideas of good prayers and phrases that I can make these videos for! Great thread!
