The Catholic Church and the Whore of Babylon

I keep hearing ABOUT this argument but have never actually heard it (like those legendary “the end of the world is at hand” guys in New York): Can anyone shed some light on exactly what the Catholic Church is accused of when it is said that we are the Antichrist, the “Whore of Babylon?”

There are actual several variations of the argument, but it boils down to an anti-Catholic interpretation of Revelation chapter 17 which describes Babylon the Great, the Great Harlot (whore) who sits upon many waters (nations, tribes, peoples, and tongues) and who also sits upon seven hills. The argument claims that this points to the Roman Catholic church since we encompass people of all races and languages and also because Rome, from whence the Pope reigns, is a city which sits on seven hills. That’s basically it. Of course, it’s nonsense, even if only for the fact that Vatican Hill (where St. Peter’s basilica is) is not even one of
the Seven Hills of Rome !!

I voted no, but I know a lot about it.

I haven’t had it pushed right in my face, but I was handed a Jack Chick tract once that said the pope was the anti-christ and the head of the whore of Babylon. I laughed like crazy and didn’t think it was serious until I learned more about it years later.

I voted yes, but only if you construe “to your face” as “directly, but online”.

Hi Lumancer!

Check this article out from the CA ma(name removed by moderator)age library.

Hunting the Whore of Babylon "Some anti-Catholics claim the Catholic Church is the Whore of Babylon of Revelation 17 and 18. Dave Hunt, in his 1994 book, A Woman Rides the Beast, presents nine arguments to try to prove this. His claims are a useful summary of those commonly used by Fundamentalists, and an examination of them shows why they don’t work. "

Pax tecum,

Yes, but this poll doesn’t allow for me personally being called anti-christ that was directed at the Pope.

So which am I supposed to pick off the poll?

have you guys tried Scott Hahn’s study on Revalations? I
recommend it. great for listening while driveing , just don’t try to take notes.

I second this, because Dr. Hahn comes from a very anti-Catholic background, so he knows the ins and outs of the arguments stating the church is the whore of babylon, and refutes them quite well.:stuck_out_tongue:

One day, I saw a guy preaching on a street corner. In a country where Catholics make up a very small minority, he was loudly proclaiming that the Catholic Church was the work of Satan. I took two of his tracts, sat down in a Burger King, got out my pen, and corrected the many, many historical, factual, and logical errors in one of the tracts. I handed that one back to him, and, when he saw what I had done to it, he shouted after me as I walked down the street, calling me an “idolater”. I took the other tract to the Catholic cathedral, and gave it to the first cleric whom I could find, saying that I had found someone else for whom he could pray.

I am not a Catholic.

(If you want a summary of anti-Catholic hate propaganda, try Jack Chick’s “Online Witnessing Tools”.)
