Vatican II and Tridentine Mass

I’m new to the Latin Mass (attended my first a little over a week ago and have gone several times since) and I’m just curious about what happened.

I’ve heard Vatican II never specifically told Bishops to get rid of the Latin Mass and (from what my priest said) most of the changes to the Mass in Vatican II were suggestions rather than orders, so why is it that every Parish in the US seems to have willingly adopted all the changes.

Didn’t anyone put up a fight?

Where does Pope Benedict XVI stand on preserving the EF and spreading it?

Has anyone heard anything about the possibility of brining back certain aspects of the EF such as communion rails, kneeling, etc?

Any explanations would be greatly appreciated.
