What happens if remarried outside the Church and former spouse dies?

I was married in the Catholic Church on May1967. We were divorced in 1975. I re-married in 1996. My first husband passed away a few weeks ago, will I have to be married to my present husband in the Catholic Church before I can receive Holy Communion.

Yes. Your current civil marriage is not recognized by the Church because as a Catholic you are canonically bound to marry in the Church. Since your current civil marriage is outside the Church it will need to be validated. You will need to provide some kind of proof/evidence that your husband from your first marriage has passed away and after that its just some basic paperwork, assuming (of course) that your current civil spouse is free to marry.

God bless.
