Why does a Catholic Bishop remove the Mitre and Zucchetto during certain parts of the Mass? This was something I just recognized. I assume they remove these articles as a sign of respect?
The way I understand it, the mitre is a symbol of a bishop’s teaching office. He removes it during the readings to indicate that even he listens and learns from Holy Scripture. The zucchetto is removed during the Eucharistic Prayer because we still observe the Jewish custom that men remove their hats while praying.
1 Corinthians 11:4

Any man who prays or prophesies with his head covered brings shame upon his head
Men are not supposed to wear anything on their heads
while in the presence of God, pardon my theology on this,
but it’s so the Holy Spirit can get into their heads from above.
Keeping nothing hidden or obstructed. In the same manner,
monks who shaved the tops of their heads (often you see a friar
with a circular hairdo), that is for the same reason.
Concerning women, for humility and being subservient to the
man, they were supposed to wear a headress. This is also
because the veil is a metaphor for the sin of Eve.
Here is more on this:

"But I want you to understand that the head of every man is Christ, the head of a woman is her husband, and the head of Christ is God. Any man who prays or prophesies with his head covered dishonors his head, but any woman who prays or prophesies with her head unveiled dishonors her head—it is the same as if her head were shaven. For if a woman will not veil herself, then she should cut off her hair; but if it is disgraceful for a woman to be shorn or shaven, let her wear a veil.
“For a man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God; but woman is the glory of man. (For man was not made from woman, but woman from man. Neither was man created for woman, but woman for man.) That is why a woman ought to have a veil on her head, because of the angels…If any one is disposed to be contentious, we recognize no other practice, nor do the churches of God.” (1 Corinthians 11:3-10,16)
I’ve always thought it was so odd that Bishops remove their hats but women refuse to cover their heads…
Teaching comes from the same place but we keep one part and ignore the other? Does. Not. Computer.
Actually it’s a religious requirement for Jewish men to keep their heads covered during prayer… to remind you that God is always above you, and that He is close.
The zucchetto can be worn by all clergy, although it’s not as common for priests to wear them anymore. Different colors are used depending on rank (e.g. a priest would wear a black one).
A monastic on this forum explained it pretty well the other day… He said that the reason for wearing the zucchetto is the same as it is for Jews, but that it is removed at the Preface to prepare for Christ’s presence on the altar. The head remains unconvered during the Eucharistic Prayer because the focus is on God immediately present before you on the altar, rather than above you. The zucchetto is not put back on the head until after Communion. The same rules also apply to the monastic cowl.
