Afghan Convert May Be Unfit to Stand Trial

By DANIEL COONEY
KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) - An Afghan man facing a possible death penalty for converting from Islam to Christianity may be mentally unfit to stand trial, a state prosecutor said Wednesday.

Abdul Rahman, 41, has been charged with rejecting Islam, a crime under this country’s Islamic laws. His trial started last week and he confessed to becoming a Christian 16 years ago. If convicted, he could be executed.

But prosecutor Sarinwal Zamari said questions have been raised about his mental fitness.

``We think he could be mad. He is not a normal person. He doesn’t talk like a normal person,’’ he told The Associated Press.

Moayuddin Baluch, a religious adviser to President Hamid Karzai, said Rahman would undergo a psychological examination.

Well, it will get the Afghanistan authorities out from under the condemnation of the West and we won’t pull our troops (or so they hope). This is disgraceful. Civilized countries permit freedom of religion and don’t call people insane for converting from one religion to another. This is why Islam is a religion in need of reform.

Watch him for yourself. Who is insane: Rahman or the jihadists who want to kill him?

Here is video of Muslim-born Abdul Rahman, the Christian convert facing the death penalty in Afghanistan for possessing a Bible and openly professing his faith.

Sounds like anyone who does not believe as they do is mentally unstable in their eyes.

That same thought crossed my mind when I read the OP’s quote. Then It occured to me that this may be the “easy out” for the Afghan government without triggering an internal/intrnational Muslim backlash or diplomatic problems.

Anyone know the history of the Inquisition? This diagnosis of insanity happened all the time. This is really Middle Ages stuff going on here.

Well, if recent history is any indicator, I’d say that insanity and Islam seem to go hand-in-hand. You mention the Inquisition; do you mean that an Islamic version is now occuring in Afghanistan?
