Afghan debate a ‘call for patriotism’: Colonel
Col. Michel Drapeau, former director general for the Department of National Defence, said the position of the Canadian government is clear – Ottawa stands squarely behind this deployment.
“The debate would be more as a call for patriotism in order to in fact inform Canadians, and in order to answer those who may still have doubts as to the rationale for being there at least for the time being”…
In a surprise move, Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s government announced yesterday it had agreed to hold a parliamentary debate on the mission in Afghanistan on Monday evening. It is only a “take-note” debate, meaning there will be no vote on the mission.
Politicians will just get to express their opinions about the mission… During those negotiations, the government became convinced that most of the parliamentarians would speak in favour of the mission, said The Globe. Drapeau said that oppositions leaders know that not showing support for our troops risks both the morale of soldiers, and could provide our enemies with ammunition.
