Hello,
This magazine was recently highly recommended to me. I have heard not-so-good things about it.

Do any of you have experience with this magazine?

Any advice would be appreciated!
Thanks!

It’s a Jesuit publication, if that tells you anything.

Fr. Mitch Pacwa is also a Jesuit, so that really doesn’t tell us anything does it?

Nevertheless, I think I agree with what is being intimated. America has a pretty unorthodox “liberal” slant to its writing.

I would suggest National Catholic Register (NOT NC Reporter) for Catholic news. There are many other good magazines with other missions.
Apologetics-Envoy and This Rock
Ecumenism and Culture-Touchstone and First Things

Other suggestions?

The style of writing found in America magazine tends to be so highly nuanced that it can end up supporting positions that aren’t quite orthodox. But the route to the conclusion tends to be so circuitous that by the end of the article one is not quite sure what to believe, except that possibly the straight line orthodox position is too “black & white.” Just my impression.

I subscribed to *America * for a year before I knew better. Heterodoxical for the most part.

Ditto. Also:
Crisis
Catholic Faith & Family
The Latin Mass
Lay Witness
Canticle

I can’t live w/o my National Catholic Reporter 🙂

If you want good Catholic magazines try:
“Crisis” Its about culture and politics.
"Envoy"It’s real good apologetics magazine. and
“First Things” It has essay’s written about religious philosophy.

I know the good Catholic magazines. I’m actually trying to find arguments against America so that I can explain to someone why they should not subscribe.

Thanks for all the good suggestions, but I need ammo. 😉

I don’t know if America has explicitly supported ideas which are explicitly against Church teaching. They may have, but often debate is allowed in the Church regardless of how unorthodox it appears at the outset. This is a way to find the truth.

I disagree with most of what America publishes, but found that it presents another side of the questions that I haven’t explored. With all the other publications, America has its use in the free-market of ideas. Just make sure you balance it with other magazines so you get a fuller-picture.

For example, I subscribe to Atlantic Monthly but I also subscribe to National Review (which could be considered a Catholic magazine).

The Jebbies jumped off the wagon more than twenty years ago, and no Jesuit college today can be called “Catholic” in the traditional sense.

robbys,

to make such a claim is offensive and uneducated. there are more than enough conservative jesuits out there that put the shameful lie to your post.

I subscribe to America Magazine, This Rock, and First Things.

America Magazine is more “liberal” than “heterodox”. Most of their articles deal with Catholic social teaching. Many of these articles take the liberal point of view as to how to solve social problems (but so does the Vatican).

Recently there was a very good article arguing against same-sex marraige. They have taken a strong stance against abortion. They are against the death penalty. They were against the war in Iraq. They have had very good articles on the topic of sex abuse in the clergy.

I find that America magazine is not about apologetics. It is about discussing social issues.

I find that I often disagree with the editorial viewpoint of America Magazine. I have written many letters to the editor and I they have occasionaly been published. Personally I think it is a very good magazine that would get better if more people read it and wrote letters about the issues that they bring forward. After they published a number of negative reviews of “The Passion” movie I wrote a couple of letters. A few issues later they had an editorial bringing up many of the points that I had expressed in my letter.

Sometimes reading This Rock makes me feel like I live in a cave. When I read America Magazine I feel a greater obligation for getting involved in this society and globally.
