Sadly, this was a case that was, in the end, no surprise. There were credible reports circulating about this man for many years.

The real scandal here is, there certainly were countless clergy who were well aware of the behavior of the prelate in question, especially with seminarians. There were some attempted interventions, all of which failed. The only reason this story broke now, I suspect, is that the victim who came forward was a minor.

This doesn’t look good. The worst part is they knew what he was doing to seminarians. They were allowing him to predate upon young potential priests. From what I’ve read this was a major problem in many seminaries.

This is just terrible.

I’m tired of these cover ups in the Catholic Church.

Rip the bandaid off. Expose them all and do better going forward

The victim in this case was 17 years old when the alleged incident occurred. I can understand that he would be reluctant to come forward at the time. But why did he wait 47 years?

Indeed. Over at GetReligion.org, Julia Duin has a blog entry about why, although she knew many details of this, she couldn’t ever get anything published during her time as a journalist for the Washington Times… The scandal of Cardinal Theodore McCarrick and why no major media outed him — GetReligion

In short, she couldn’t get sources to speak on the record and didn’t have access to confidential settlement documents. But she knew of the allegations, even saw one file related to them, and she says that most major East Coast media outlets probably knew the allegations as well.

That is what I am wondering.
Can’t his “red hat” be revoked since it’s not an order of the priesthood?

DH said 3 journalists and clergy knew about this for years, but it was off record.
