The Jesus Papers : Exposing the Greatest Cover-Up in History
by Michael Baigent
Book Description
What if everything you think you know about Jesus is wrong? In The Jesus Papers, Michael Baigent reveals the truth about Jesus’s life and crucifixion. Despite – or rather because of – all the celebration and veneration that have surrounded the figure of Jesus for centuries, Baigent asserts that Jesus and the circumstances leading to his death have been heavily mythologized.
As a religious historian and a leading expert in the field of arcane knowledge, Baigent has unequaled access to hidden archives, secret societies, Masonic records, and the private collections of antiquities traders and their moneyed clients. Using that access to full advantage, Baigent explores the religious and political climate in which Jesus was born and raised, examining not only the conflicts between the Romans and the Jews, but the strife within the different factions of the Jewish Zealot movement. He chronicles the migrations of Jesus’s family, his subsequent exposure to other cultures, and the events, teachings, and influences that were most likely to have shaped his early years. Baigent also uncovers the inconsistencies and biases in the accounts of the major historians of Jesus’s time, including Josephus, Pliny, and Tacitus. The enduring influence of these accounts in forming our most common conceptions of Jesus reveals that spin is not a new phenomenon.
Taking us back to sites that over the last twenty years he has meticulously explored, studied, and in some instances excavated for the first time, Baigent provides a detailed account of his groundbreaking discoveries, including many never-before-seen photos. The evidence he has uncovered has lead him to make shocking new assertions that threaten the conventional account of Jesus’s life and death and shake the very foundation of Western thought, based as it is upon the assumption of Jesus’s divinity. Ultimately, his investigation raises the hope that we may gain a new understanding of Jesus.

Michael Baigent was born in New Zealand in 1948 and obtained a degree in psychology from Canterbury University, Christchurch. Since 1976 he has lived in England. He is the author of Ancient Traces and From The Omens Of Babylon and, with Richard Leigh, he has co-authored a number of books, including the international best-sellers The** Holy Blood And The Holy Grail (with Henry Lincoln), The Dead Sea Scrolls Deception, Secret Germany and, The Elixir And The Stone**. His latest book, co-written as always with Richard Leigh, is entitled THE INQUISITION, which reveals the darker side of this infamous Catholic institution both in the past and in the present day.’
He considers that there is nothing too weird to be true.

Maybe we need to put together an apologetic outline for dealing with these fiction books that are nonsense that people read uncritically.

Wow. After 2000 years, someone finally is enlightened enough to tell us “the real story” about Jesus. Honestly…this age thinks it knows so much more than any other generation. I am afraid they are sorely mistaken.

I goota get this book so I can be straightened out. 😉 I seem to remember a certain sect that had “secret” knowledge as an early heresy.

Pax vobiscum!

You know, my favorite part is where he talks about “uncovering inconsistancies and biases” in Josephus and Tacitus. Hmm…the only thing that both of those authors did was mention that there was a man named Jesus (or Christus, in the case of Tacitus) that was crucified. If I remember correctly, Josephus also mentions that Jesus claimed to be the Son of God. How are there inconsistancies in those records? Tacitus simply talks about the Christians in Rome getting their name from a man named “Christus” or “Christe” (I don’t remember which one he uses). How is that an inconsistancy? There are biases, to be sure–Josephus was a Jew so obviously he was critical of Jesus’ claims, and Tacitus viewed the Christians in Rome as a nuisance, but neither of them talk about Jesus enough for there to be any inconsistancies in their writing; they each spend maybe a couple of sentances on him. The only thing we can get from their writings is that there was a man with his name who was crucified. Perhaps this man has found their “secret archives” and uncovered what they “really” wrote!

Not a bad idea actually. Unfortunately people do buy into pop culture. One girl I work with left the faith after reading the Da Vinci code. She now does tarot (she calls them angel cards) card readings for people. 😦

Peace and God Bless

or bring back the banned book index.

a leading expert in the field of arcane knowledge
What is this? sheesh   Where do I get a masters in “arcane knowlege”? Sounds like dialogue out of a bad comic book.

“OK, Paul, here’s the deal. You get to spend your life on the road, preaching about this guy who died shamefully and then rose from the dead. You will be flogged five times, beaten with rods three times, stoned once, shipwrecked three times–passing a day and a night on the open water, in continuous danger from rivers, from robbers, from your own people, from foreigners, in danger in the city, in the wilderness, at sea, from false friends. And oh, by the way, it’s all in support of a falsehood. The guy never really actually rose from the dead; we’re just making that part up.”

If anybody thinks the actual resurrection is unlikely, please try considering the scenario that I have outlined above.

“Oh, one more thing, Paul. You’re going to be beheaded, your closest friend, Peter, will be set on fire while crucified upside down (along with 50 other Christians), your friend Andrew will be crucified, all of Peter’s earliest successors will be killed…well, you get the point, Paul. But we gotta keep up this lie!”

Yep, this certainly does prove a falsehood!

Another case of anything to make a buck.
Has he sold the movie rights yet ?

Someone had better prepare something for people who’ll have their faith tested as a result of the film version of the “Code”

Sadie, I agree, the book is nonsense, but many people I know are under the impression that it’s absolutely historically accurate, so that for a short time they recreated their faith around the fictions of the book. Very strange. All of them forgot about it after a few months though

Good point. I should not dismiss it so quickly. This kind of thing just makes me sick. The fact that there are people that take it seriously makes me even more sick. Sorry if I was a little harsh.

Oh no, you weren’t harsh, and the whole thing makes me sick, too. Anyway, I don’t even want to imagine the mess when they release the film!

True. And, I am sure that we can count on Hollywood taking as many shots at Jesus and the Catholic Church as they possibly can.

How can you dismiss it so casually? Didn’t you read that " Baigent has unequaled access to hidden archives, secret societies, Masonic records, and the private collections of antiquities traders and their moneyed clients."

Wow! Masonic records. Maybe there will be a foward by the Illuminotti or the Tri-Lateral commission.

I read the reviews on the amazon link Daniel provided. They are very insightful. Basically, this book is a re-hash of the old “Holy Grail” book punched out to make money off the Da Vinci code publicity.
