Arlington Diocese of VA. now permits female altar servers

Bishop Loverde of the Arlington diocese of Virginia has now left it up to the parish priests whether they want to allow girls to be altar servers. Is this really in line with what the Vatican teaches? According to an article that appeared in “This Rock” magazine in May 1993, it appears that the bishop’s decision to allow this is unorthodox. Has something changed since 1993 to make this now acceptable?
 
Yes, something did change (in March 1994, as a matter of fact). Here is a link with some information.
