I would think this question has been asked here before, but my search was not successful. If anyone can provide a link, it would be much appreciated. My question is about wearing work clothes to a week day Mass. In my work, I often get muddy or sweaty, or even get my clothes torn. Of course, I dress very casually. Sometimes the timing works out that I can make it to a daily mass in the middle of my day, but I don’t go because of how my clothes look. I have thought about keeping some clean clothes in the car for a quick-change if the opportunity arises. What do you think? Go to mass dirty, or go only if I have time to change clothes?

First question: Can you change at work, instead of in the car (I assume that’s what you meant by “clean clothes in the car”)?

Actually, I would probably have to carry the clothes into the church to change in the bathroom there.

This is a great question, 'cos I run into this all the time myself.

Why don’t you think you could change at work?

I don’t think you should worry about your clothing. It is better for you to attend if you can.

What time is daily Mass?

Perhaps I’m making an assumption, but I think he’s concerned people might think he doesn’t care how he looks, which could give the wrong impression about his view of the Mass itself.

For the most part, I work outside, so I could get arrested, not to mention modesty.

Well, that could certainly be a problem.

If there is no feasible way for you to change, and no other Mass you can get to, go to Mass and don’t worry about.

God won’t mind a bit.

I’m concerned about being disrespectful to the sacredness of the Mass and distracting others.

As long as you’re reverent (which I’m sure you are), the others will soon realize that you simply couldn’t change your clothes, and it will be a non-issue.

And the very fact that you’re going to the daily Mass will say much, much more about you and your attitude towards the Mass than the clothes you are wearing.

At that time (for daily Mass) I would not think it is dis-respectful to attend in your work attire - as is. It is a good thing that you can attend!

ya see… This is the whole problem behind all of the heated mass “attire” debates we have here on CAF. Everyone wants to bully you about what you wear that might offend God… But what they really mean is they want you to dress up to their expectations! It just seems a little snobby to me.

Nobody… I think the reaction of ‘other people’ all depends on the social structure of your hometown. For instance, I live in a farming and ranching community, and it isn’t uncommon to see someone come to mass who obviously has come in from the field to come to mass. Or has just gotten off shift. Just go to mass and don’t worry about it. If you can change out of soiled clothes, fine. But don’t miss mass if you can’t do it.

God sees us in the nude people, at our best and our worst. Yes, it is nice to dress up and make an effort. But don’t ever judge someone for not looking up to your standards. Remember the man who sat in the back of the church, beat his breast, could not lift his eyes and cried out to God, Lord have mercy on me a sinner. And the other man who was proud and said, “Thank you God that I am not like this sinner”… One of these men left - justified before God.

Ridesawhitehors,

I agree, as you’ll see from my other posts.

nobody, I wouldn’t worry about it. I’m sure people assume you are an outdoors worker. I agree with ridesawhite horse.

Blessings!

I think that the bottom line is…Go and Rejoice in the Mass!

(Jesus never put a label upon anyone)

the accepted attire for daily Mass should be work clothes, whatever that happens to be, for those who are going to or coming from work. I usually show up in work out clothes, covered by warm-ups. for years it was chemical resistant suit and steel-toed shoes, and before that a waitress uniform.

If anybody gives you a hard time about what you are wearing ask them: which do you think would please Jesus more, if I quit my job and go on welfare, or should I just quit coming to daily Mass?
