Start by asking him why he doesn’t believe in God. Usually the reasons are personal not truly ones of doubt in the possibility of the existence of a Supreme Being/God. S/he won’t tell you the personal reason first, though. More likely s/he will bring up some seeming inconsistency in the Bible or some form of injustice s/he thinks God ought to correct (which would “prove” his existence, but which s/he really hopes would answer his/her deepest needs).

And, if you probe deeper, you’ll probably hit a nerve so be prepared for him/her to become angry and lash out at you. So, before doing any probing, pray hard and fast for him/her because what you are up against isn’t mere disbelief, but a wounded heart and soul crying out for help by denying the very One whose help s/he needs the most.

Language can be a tricky thing.

"God’ can be a thing that some people debate the existence of while for other people the word “God” can be the name given to existence.

If two people start with different definitions of the word then they will not be able to have much meaningful discussion of the topic.

Suggest to your friend that the Bible is a record of people who heard the Voice of Reality and tried to respond to it. Some heard the Voice better than others and some responded better than others.

Jesus knew Reality the way an only son knows his Father. That is as close a relationship with Reality as one can have.

I think atheism has something to do with breaking the second commandment… but I am not really sure yet.

peace
