Did anyone out there read about this? This is a curious event, no?

Partriarch of either east or west tends to lead people to think that there can be two patriarchs of equal authority; seperated only by geography.

Pope Benedict is, as is all successors to the seat of Peter, the ONLY patriarch of the apostolic church. By renouncing the “west” variation, he is denying any attempt by the Orthodox patriarch of the “east” to possibly claim equal jurisdiction and authority.

He did it because it was no longer an accurate title.

West refers to the industrialized countries of Western Europe and the Americas (and a few others) and excludes Africa, most of South America, Asia, Oceania (The Third World Countries}. The Pope’s jurisdiction is much more.

With respect, I don’t think it is accurate that the Church regards the pope as the ONLY patriarch of the apostolic Church (I think she assents to the fact that there are four other great patriarchates). She just thinks he’s the one with the fullness of the authority to bind and loose, on his own and without reference to any other bishop (the bishops only teach infallibly when they do so in conjunction with him and each other together).

Thanks for the (name removed by moderator)ut I think I understand it more 🙂

Jimmy Akin has been blogging about this some:

Look down the blog to March 23, or search for “patriarch” on the page.
