I’m a little frustrated with what seems like the complete blindness of 40-60 year olds to the vast difference between the worl as they experienced it and the world younger folks live in. Therefore, I just wanted to ask baby boomers to try the following experiment(anybody who wants to add something, please do):
Imagine that from your earliest days, you were dressed in androgynous clothing.
Imagine that, if you are female, you received special approval for playing with blocks and cars, and subtle disapproval for playing with Barbies or baby dolls.
Imagine that, if you are white, you were admonished about racism from the moment you became aware of other races, and lectured against racist beliefs that had never crossed your mind.
Imagine that, if you are a girl, you could get away with any act of cruelty and violence if it were directed toward a boy. If you were a boy, imagine a girl could get away with doing *anything *to you (even pushing you down the stairs).
Imagine that you grew up viewing having your parents divorce as a normal rite of passage, similar to losing your first tooth.
Imagine that, if you are female, you were taught from an early age that angry tantrums were a healthy sign of being in touch with your anger and something that girls should do more of.
Imagine that your first discussions with adults about sex included the strong implication that you would have lots of it, long before marriage, and that this was healthy.
Imagine that the adults around you taught you it was unhealthy to restrain your sexual impulses.
Imagine that you learned at an early age that half of your generation had been aborted.
Imagine that you were taught to see abortion as a rite of passage in a woman’s life, almost as a sacrament, and to view those who opposed it as evil, dangerous psychopaths.
Imagine that your first awareness of religion was colored with the idea that it was dangerous, backward and evil.
Imagine that the only relgions acceptable to your parents were Hinduism, Buddhism, Wicca and the like.
Imagine that your first concept of homosexuality was that it was cool, and that you could prove you were cool by making a show of your positive attitude towards it.
Imagine that you were taught from childhood that the world was overpopulated and that the existence of human beings meant the destruction of other equally or more valuable creatures. Couple this with the knowledge that you were nearly aborted.
Imagine that you were taught that there was no absolute truth or reality from such an early age that your first use of logic was done under the influence of relativism.
Imagine that you were taught bad things would happen to you if you did not masturbate.
Imagine, if you are female, that you were expected to sleep with a man within the first few meetings or be dropped as a “prude”
Imagine no one ever taught you about appropriate dress or manners, yet society still expected you to know these things.
Imagine, if you are male, that you were taught from childhood that males were evil.
Imagine, if you are female, that even if you were so lucky as to find a man willing to marry you, you could never expect him to support you financially, even when you were raising small children.
Imagine that, after a quarter century of depression, trauma and instability due to the above influences, when you began to discover and adopt the beliefs of your grandparents you were accused by parents and teachers of being “afraid to experiment and live life”.
