John the Baptist said “i baptize with water, but one greater than I will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire”
so what exaclty does this mean?
i know that charismatics say that you will speak in tongues when you recieve the baptism of the Holy Spirit, but i dont know what Catholics say about this, and i would like to know. i have been findin soo much truth in Catholicism in the past few months.

That comes up in two different gospels, Matthew 3 and Luke 3. Here’s the footnote my Bible has for the Luke occurrence:
He will baptize you with the holy Spirit and fire: in contrast to John’s baptism with water, Jesus is said to baptize with the holy Spirit and with fire. From the point of view of the early Christian community, the Spirit and fire must have been understood in the light of the fire symbolism of the pouring out of the Spirit at Pentecost (Acts 2:1-4); but as part of John’s preaching, the Spirit and fire should be related to their purifying and refining characteristics (Ezekiel 36:25-27; Malachi 3:2-3).
The main point seems to be the coming down of the Holy Spirit as well as purification.

thanx, that sounds good. soo what if a protestant or charismatic says “but it said “BUT he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire””, and they try to use that as a means of doing away with water baptism?

Then wouldn’t that be placing John the Baptists teachings over and above Jesus Christ’s? (John 3:5) Jesus answered, "Amen, amen, I say to you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and Spirit." John’s teachings are talking about the spiritual actions during Baptism (Holy Spirit and Fire). Jesus gives the more complete teaching, giving us Matter (Water) and later on Form (“Baptize them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit”), which will bring on the Holy Spirit. As with all Sacraments, we must use the matter and form in order to gain the graces of that Sacrament.

That would be highly unlikely
as a former Charismatic Protestant ( still Charismatic, not Protestant) NO sect I know of would deny water baptism and if they do they are heretical to ALL of Christianity, not just the RCC

Peace

Baptism in water and the Holy Spirit refers to the complete Baptism inaugurated by Jesus Christ, the baptism which he directed the Apostles to carry out as they evangelized all nations. In Catholic sacramental economy baptism and confirmation are closely linked, with the sign of water and the Trinitarian formula, and the sign of anointing with oil and laying on of hands invoking the Holy Spirit.

In the Catholic Charismatic Renewal the para-liturgy (not an official liturgical rite of the Church) called baptism in the spirit means usually an acceptance of the gifts of the Holy Spirit already received through baptism and confirmation, and submission to the Holy Spirit in their use for one’s own spirituality and to build up the Church.

You should tell them to read their Bible a bit closer:
1 Pet 3: 21 … baptism doth also now save us … (KJV)

If you need something a bit more expansive, I recommend this.

God Bless,

i just found out that a very good friend of mine has been smokin weed for a while now. and she likes how it makes her feel. her name is samantha. so could you please pray for her!!?? thank you. God bless

👋 This verse has also puzzled me too. I try and do the Rosary every day, when do the Luminous mysterious, I am always confused on the scripture readings. For instance with John baptising the people, wernt these people Jews and when did the Jews start being baptised? I thought that the Law of the Lord was for Jews to be circumcised??? Sorry for being so vague, but if someone could help me I would appreciate it. I know that when the Jews had specific ceremonies they had to wash/purify themselves so could this be the reason??? :o
