May I suggest to my friends on Catholic Answers Forum to watch this short film, ‘Quaerere Deum’, showing the beautiful life of the traditional (in full communion with Rome, permitted to practice both rites of Holy Mass) Benedictine monastery in the heart of Norcia, Italy, the birthplace of St Benedict. I am discerning my vocation to this beautiful place and plan to visit in March, however, I am currently struggling deeply with some personal psychological issues regarding a recent breakup and insecurities. Please pray for me, friends. Praying for all of you.

I’m not sure if you’re aware but since that film was made, the monastery was destroyed in the October, 2016 earthquake, the basilica was completely flattened. The monks have relocated to the nearby hills. The basilica will be rebuilt but will return to the diocese; they need it as every single church in the town was destroyed.

However their mission continues, from their small monastery. One year before the unfortunate earthquake, I visited the basilica with a small group of oblates, and met the former prior, Dom Cassian Folsom. Their chant is very beautiful.

What’s important is not the building in which they live, but the spirit of the community itself which did come out of the earthquake unscathed.

Yes, I was aware, and have been in contact with the monks and they’re happy for me to visit as they have a guesthouse. So sad that the beautiful basilica was destroyed, however their love for the area is obvious in their rebuilding efforts.
