I was speaking with a neighbor at school today and she said that she had not been going to Mass lately because of the sexism of male only priests, the abuse scandal, proclamations from Rome and did not want her kids exposed to those ideas.

Can anyone offer a more liberal reason to remain Catholic and resume Mass attendance? She is not going to be open to a Scott Hahn tape at this time. I would like to give her something that will not make her defensive but keep her marginally Catholic where she currently is. I would love to win her over but would that be easier now while she is at least marginally Catholic or a year from now assuming she left formally and joined a liberal denomination.

Any thoughts? I want to meet her where she is; not enable her but not overwhelm her either. I believe the hurch has the Truth. What is the best approach for this woman?

If she’s not open to a mere tape, there’s no way she’d crack a book. Give her solid Catholic teaching. It could take the form of a conversion story. A tape doesn’t seem that burdensome to me. She could listen to it while driving.

Whatever you do, don’t feed her dissident “Catholic” material so as not to offend her dissident tendencies. Present the truth in love, patiently and with much prayer.

One way to win back somebody who is moving to liberal denominations is to introduce him/her to charismatic catholic.

The way that liberal denominations worship is similar to charismatic catholic prayer group worship. Thus a catholic does not need to go to other church to find such form of worship.

If she has some issue about woman priests and so on, she might want to listen to teaching about “God’s people” as the Bride of Christ. And that priests in the old testament are all males. Biblical nature of protestant Churches will respect Biblical answers as well.

Another thought: These issues are addressed on the Catholic.com library and in online back issues of This Rock magazine, which can be searched for. You could print appropriate articles and give them to her.

As a former “liberal Catholic” myself, I can tell you what did it for me: the discovery of how truly diverse orthodox Catholicism is (and how truly stale and predictable post-Vatican II liberal heterodoxy is). Buy some talks on cassette/CD of Catholics of non-caucasian backgrounds and loan them to her. Here’s some of my suggestions:

1). Babsie Bleasdell - she’s an awesome speaker from Trinidad who’s from the Chairismatic tradition. Very solid! Do a google search on her to find various sites that sell her stuff, or you can download some free talks here

2). Fr. Tony Ricard is also very solid and has a special love for Mary and the Blessed Sacrament. His site is here

3). Alex Jones

4). Archbishop Chaput (American Indian)

5). Fr. Richard Ho Lung (Thai)

Then ask her if she can come up with such a diverse group of liberals in the church! Well, maybe don’t ask her directly. . .remember: “See, I am sending you out like sheep into the midst of wolves; so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves.” Matt 10:16

Agree with proceeding gently and certainly lead by good example by being a good Catholic with a huge heart. I truly believe that every dissenter deep down wants to believe Christ’s Church is everything it says it is and just the daily garbage of scandal, humanistic propaganda, etc. prevents them. Offering resistance only feeds the energy monster.
