Book recommendations.

Greetings,

I’m not sure if this is the best place to post this, but I’ll give it a shot. I’m trying to learn more about our faith and I would like to purchase a book or two to get me started. I have the Catechism and I’m looking things up there when I have questions. Other than a Bible, that is the extent of my Catholic library. Any recommendations on where to start.

Here are a couple of topics I’ve been looking at on Amazon.com:
  1. The Mass - there are a couple of books I’ve been looking at including one by Scott Hahn (which I’m sure is great but also seems quite intense) and one by Michael Dubriel.
  2. The Rosary - there are many books on this topic. Any recommended ones?
  3. Augustine’s Confessions - I eventually want to read this but I’m kind of intimidated by it. It seems very intense for where I’m at right now in my faith.
A little background that may help in any recommendations. I was raised Catholic, but became somewhat apathetic through my mid-to-late 20s. I’m 31 now, and I am very excited about renewing my commitment to the faith.

Any help would be appreciated.

Have you perused Catholicism For Dummies ?
Good book for beginners written by two priest.

Our situations sound exactly alike, and I just want to wish you best of luck with your search for information and say welcome “back”! I read a good book once called “Why DO Catholoics do That?”, it anwsers some questions about traditions and practices I never even knew to ask. I’m interested to see which books are suggested so I can take a look too.

The Lambs Supper by Scott Hahn is not that difficult to understand. It is very simple. I am currently reading The Incredible Catholic Mass by Fr. Cochem and it is good. This might be a little ahead of where you are now, I don’t know though. It was written for the lay people.

Augustines confessions are not hard to read for the first nine chapters. It is just the story of his conversion and it is partly written in prayer form. The last four chapters are tough because he gets into some doctrine. But the book is very good. I atleast recommend that you read the first ninne chapters.

Also the Family Catechism, Teen Catechism or College Catechism, all by Fr. McBride, depending on your age level, succinct clear exposition of each section of the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

Catholicism for Dummies, at any chain bookstore or Catholic book catalog.

Get a Catechism of the Catholic church from any bookstore or Catholic catalog, because these other books will make reference to the various sections.
 
I just recently bought some books to read about the faith myself. The Mass of the Early Christians by Mike Aquilina is interesting because it explores the Mass from the perspective of the first Christians, and you can see how the Catholic Mass transcends all 2000 years of its existence.

I also bought Augustine’s Confessions, but am a little intimidated. I think I will read it after I finish the other books I want to read.

The best book that I know of about the rosary is The Secret of the Rosary by St. Louis De Montfort. It’s pretty short and very beautiful.
 
Besides learning about the rosary you will also learn a great deal about prayer and the church and it’s history in this phenomenal book by Kevin Orlin Johnson, PhD

I haven’t finished all of them, but each of them are valuable to me.

That’s the one I was going to recommend. I heard him talk on the rosary and bought his book. I loaned it to a friend and had to practically wrestle her to get it back!! It is an easy read, too.

A magnificent book!
 
One that hasn’t been mentioned is Frank Sheed’s Theology for Beginners; it’s an extremely helpful book for beginning to learn the depths of our Catholic Faith.
 
I second the suggestion of Catholicism For Dummies. It covers almost anything you could ask about and is very reliable.
