Katt:
Are we suppose to bow to the Book of Gospels?
Could you be a bit more specific? Prior to Mass? When the priest/deacon walks to the ambo to read the Gospel? Some other time?

No. The Book of the Gospels is a symbol. The word that is proclaimed is the “living Gospel” (which is why the book should not be elevated when the deacon/priest says “The gospel of the Lord.”)

Oh! Then my priest’s excuse for not properly veiling the chalice is invald!

His excuse, upon inquiry, was that we were honouring THE BOOK on the altar, and that the chalice veiled was only decoration. Whilst the latter is true, if the former is not then the latter is the only course to take.

The book of the Gospels, while placed on the altar during the initial part of Mass, really isn’t meant to be enshrined there, anyway.

I’m not sure what you mean by a “symbol”. While I understand and agree with your parenthesis, yet the Book is given special reverences (elevation in procession, veneration, incensation, et cetera)?

No, there is no bow to the Book of the Gospels.

Before reading the Gospel a deacon would make a deep bow in front of a priest and receive a blessing. There is to be a deep bow to the altar “by all who enter the sanctuary (chancel), leave it, or pass before the altar.” (From Ceremonial of Bishops, Liturgical Press, 1989, ISBN 0-8146-1818-9, page 37, n. 72).

After reading the Gospel, the Book of the Gospels is kissed. From the 2002 General Instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRM), n. 175:

“When the deacon is assisting the Bishop, he carries the book to him to be kissed, or else kisses it himself, saying quietly, Per evangelica dicta dicta (May the words of the gospel). In more solemn celebrations, as the occasion suggests, a Bishop may impart a blessing to the people with the Book of the Gospels.”

Usually people would bow for this blessing.
