Canonization process

When did the Canonization process formulize? and is it Infallible thing or a “We think these people are in heaven.”? Thanks and God bless.

Edit: and What of the Saints that were declared (?) saints before the process (I would assume like Peter, Paul, ect.), Do we have the same level of sureness as those after the C.P. took effect? Thanks and God bless.

Montie, there is a lot of good information on this website: Beatification and Canonization. This online Catholic encyclopedia also has a great search feature. Why don’t you try it first before posting threads? And then ask any questions you might still have after reading the articles there? You really ought to learn you way around such Catholic websites for yourself. Just a suggestion.
