Long story short I drifted away from the Church for about two years. My wife and I have four kids (7-12), and this two year absence really blew a hole in their faith formation. Since this is my fault I must endeavor to fix it. They are bored at Mass because they do not know how important it is, and I have struggled to convey it in terms they can understand. Catechesis at our parish does not resume until September, can anyone recommend some good books or resources we can go over in the meantime? I shoulkd mention one of our children is on the autism spectrum and has an extremely difficult time understanding abstract concepts/ideas. Thank you.

I’ll second Formed. They have quite a few different resources, including children’s materials.

We used the Faith & Life series (DSD is going into Grade 10 and it only goes to Grade 8 so she is finished with it). I quite liked it.

Ask your parish DRE for available resources. They likely have books on hand you can borrow or buy, videos, etc. There are catch up curriculums for both lower and upper elementary and middle school for kids who are Catholic or children converting. I’ve used this with several parents who have come to me with kids that needed to catch up and receive sacraments they had missed while parents were not practicing.

Www.catholicsprouts.com is another great resource. Nancy, who started and runs it, is a Catholic mom and has created a number of resources to help raise good Catholic kids.

One of her resources is a Mass quiet book. It’s designed to provide simple, quiet activities for children to do to help them understand the Mass better. She sells two patterns for it. One is a sewing pattern, but if your time and sewing skills are limited, the other is a paper pattern that can just be printed and glued. I have not used them myself as our daughter is a teen, but they look fantastic. She has Rosary quiet books, too.
