Gods presence in our lives.

I just got back from a special talk from this priest, who is in our parish St. Catherine of Siena here in Mississauga Ontario Canada for the 50th anniversary of our parish existance. I was deeply moved by this talk, by this very pious, funny, and genuine person. Has anyone here had the opportunity to hear him speak?

Today at mass, he gave every person a metal crucifix, asked us to take up the mission, and attend every night starting with tonight, until next friday for these faith renewal educational talks. He asked each person to look at that crucifix, and to contemplate the trials we have in our life, and what Jesus went through for us. He told us that it was Jesus calling us to come to these talks, not him, and that if we couldn’t make it for a reason that is NOT valid, to look at the crucifix and tell that to Jesus. It was quite a powerful message, because the Church was packed tonight.

In brief, his message was about Gods presence in our lives. That Genesis starts out by telling us the creation story, and at the end of each day, God said: " God saw that it was good ", but it was only after he had created man and woman, that he said: “God saw that it was VERY good”. He then proceeded to talk about how we are made in God’s likeness, in his very image. That we are beautiful and that every morning he wakes up and looks into the mirror and says “I am a masterpiece”…lol, that was funny. He asked all of us to turn to the person beside us and tell them that they were beautiful and good. We all were wondering why he wanted us to do this. He did so, because 25 yrs ago in Pittsburgh, he said these things to a group he was speaking to, and he saw a woman crying in the back. So he was scared he offfended her somehow. He walked to the back kind of getting nervous she was going to crack him over the head with her cane, and as he got close to her, he asked her why she was crying. She said, that for the first time in her life, someone told her she was good and beautiful. Fr. Claudio asked her, how old she was, and she replied she was 85 yrs old. So Fr. Claudio made a promise to God, that he would never do another missions without starting it with this exercise. It was truly moving.

He talked about how there is a serious problem today, of young people growing up knowing who created them (God), but not why he created them (to know, love, and serve him). This was something he knew and understood at 6 years old, but today, no body knows this. Can you imagine the tragedy of someone growing up not knowing why they exist? I think thats truly sad. He talked about our bodies being a temple of the Holy Spirit, as scripture teaches, yet we abuse our bodies with drugs, alcohol, sexual immorality, etc. He drove home the message that Jesus says we must do 2 things to be saved…

Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, and saying, Master, which is the great commandment in the law? Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

Matthew 22:35-40

This was to emphasize the importance of tonight. Where is the presence of God in your life. You are a temple of the Holy Spirit and God dwells in you. You’re body is worthless without your spirit. If you do not love yourself (and you show this in the abuse you give to your body), how can you follow God’s commandment to love your neighbour? You cannot, simple. (heck, who we kidding, I’m just as guilty of these things as anyone). Fr. Claudio asked us, to tell your wife, husband, father, mother, sister, brother, whomever…that they are beautiful, and good…tell your father that he is a good father, and tell your mother that she is a good mother…tell one another…and you will see a change in them.

continued…

He talked about people who when asked, say their Catholic, but live life as if God did not exist. They say that they go to Church (if that even), try to be a good person, and because of this, everything will be ok. Well, nothing could be a greater lie, and the author of lies, is the devil, who is pretty good at deception. We are to meet God on HIS terms…not ours. Tomorrows talk centers around Evil’s presence in our lives. I think it will be interesting.

If you are in Mississauga or anywhere in the Greater Toronto Area, this man is inspiring, hence what drove me to write this. Come to St. Catherine of Siena at 7pm everynight this week (or 9am every morning for those who work evenings). If you cannot make it, look at your crucifix, and tell it to Jesus why you are not making the effort. You will know in your heart, if your reason is valid. I’ll be there everynight. Questions are encouraged after the talk, whatever they may be. Here are the directions to the Church. God Bless.

I was involved in one of his 5 day missions during Lent of last year at St. Ann’s in Scranton, PA. He is excellent. Go every night.

Isn’t it? That is something that really stuck out at me. I always knew it, but when he said it, it really hit home.

Tonight Fr. Claudio talked about the presence of Evil in our lives. How all bad things that happen in the world, Earthquakes, Tsunami’s, etc, are a result of Sin in the world. He went on about how the devil is the father of all lies, the master of deception. How his only goal is to have everyone end up damned, like himself.

Satan thought he could be more, have more, be better than God almighty. It was not enough that he was the most beautiful angel, he needed more! He decieves us, like he decieved Adam and Eve. The good news is…that he cannot kill us, or make us go to hell…WE CHOOSE this! The expression “the devil made me do it” is bogus, because it requires our acceptance of his deception to sin.

Fr. Claudio, makes an excellent point about what the devil is doing to decieve the world today, and specifically, by creating different definitions for the same sins. For example…50-70 yrs ago, we all knew, that a man and woman living together was adultery. There were no bones about it, and although people still did it, we all knew IT WAS WRONG. Now however, there are nice names for it, like “my significant other”, or “common-law relationship”, etc. SIMPLE, IT IS ADULTERY, and he continued to drive home that point. He continued to say how there is only one truth, and that is Jesus Christ. If we looked to Jesus rather than Satan, then we would know the truth. Another example was Abortion. He quite simply stated, that ABORTION IS MURDER. Now, you could hear the gasp in the church, and he re-iterated that some people present may have been involved in an abortion, or some of the other sins he talked about, but he was clear that he was not condemning anyone. What he did say though, is that no matter what, we must call a spade, a spade. He went to great lengths yesterday about us being masterpieces created by the hands of God, and we would not exist if our mothers decided to kill us. The devil though, is the master of deception, and many people, some Catholics included, believe his lies. How many Catholics do not go to Church on Sundays…with 2 Billion Catholics in the world, I reckon a great deal…but can you tell me a priest, Bishop, or Deacon that has said its ok to miss mass, and we can come and go as we please? NO, I don’t think so, but somehow, society has conditioned us, as the say goes “if it feels good, then DO IT”…that goes for drugs, pre-marital sex, etc. One day we’ll have to answer to God, for what we have done in our lives, but I can’t thank Fr. Claudio enough for these missions, to help re-awaken the faithful in this renewal.

Anyway, he was very strong in his message, and I only wish more people could hear him speak. He is very motivating, and very blunt, and might I add, quite funny. Thats about all I can remember, even though there was much more.

God Bless.

I should add…that the entire time he talked about Satan’s deception, he continued pointing at the Crucifix (a rather large one) and driving home the point of how much Jesus loves us, and how he would die a million times over if he had to, for us, but that his one sacrifice was perfect, and eternal.

Sounds like you are having a wonderful mission in your parish!
