The priest is telling the kid to calm down and the parents are trying to tell the priest the kid is scared.

This has gone viral and yet no one has identified the priest or the family or even where in France this came from, which is a bit weird.

Of course you cant go two comments on the video without being accusing him of being a pedophile demon which is absurd and tired. Nevertheless it definitely hurts the image of the Church.
I can’t really blame folks with a Cardinal having been just revealed as a well known homosexual who propositioned and groomed seminarians. The rot is still there and deep.

AMEN! And until it is legitimately sourced, we would not want to commit the sin of rash judgement for sharing it on the interwebz. For all we know it could have been staged, it could have been people from some cult, we simply do not know.

YIKES.

That’s not great for PR.

Priests today get serious training on how to handle children. This old man needs to leave the baptisms to other priests, or take a few classes on how to handle infants/babies.

Watching it again I am surprised that the parents didn’t get the child away from him sooner… then again they were probably in shock. If my priest slapped my child and held him like that by the neck I would also be in shock. At first.

Similar to the viral photos being used for familial border separations, right?

I’d be hard pressed not beat the hell out of any one who slapped my child, Priest or not. I hope I’d be able to show restraint.

At age 89, the man may have dementia for all we know.

Having cared for an 89-year-old parent for a couple years, their judgment in dealing with others often isn’t all that great even if they don’t have dementia.

That clearly is what it looks like.

That is why I’m not sure why this video had to be made public. Certainly take it to the bishop because something had to be done, but I don’t know what purpose it serves making it upublic.

Then the next question is why is he still working at 89?!
I figured there was a priest shortage in France too. Let’s not forget Fr. Jacques Hamel, still serving at age 85 when he got martyred.
I’ve been to Masses in the USA where the priest is so old he needs grab bars to get around the sanctuary. (I would note the Mass is great apart from that. The priest still seems mentally sharp and gives good homilies.)

Even apart from the baby slapping and grabbing here, that child is way past newborn baby stage and I would have been afraid to let such an old person hold him while standing up for fear that the child would squirm and the elderly man lose his grip.

I can see a Time magazine front page here with the caption - Welcome to the Catholic Faith.

Honestly, I am not going to watch the video because I fear it will dishearten me. I pray that those around the priest will rally to help him. From what others have posted, it is probable that he is not well.
