I worked in Lynchburg for over 20 years. The newspaper has a history of being at loggerheads with the fundamentalist community. The local television station, I have heard but not confirmed, is owned by a Mormon.
In the television interview, the grandmother, who is raising the child, said, “We can’t tell her what to wear.” The grandmother also made statements about it being about clothing and hair length. I was quite leery of the way the grandmother presented her parenting choices.
The school did not ask the family to remove the girl. That was their decision. She is now enrolled in a public school.
