Christian songs which are totally non-Catholic

Some of the threads had me in a nostalgia about my Baptist days and some of our hymns. I enjoy debating the theology of “Amazing Grace”, but some songs are so out there that they are beyond debate. Since we all bring our own experiences into the church,

what songs have you come across that are so obviously non-Catholic that their it is beyond reasonable debate?

I am takling about songs that if you heard in Mass would make you want to run out the front door, if only to double check the sign in front of the church. I’ll start with the two that got me thinking.

“I’ll See You in the Rapture” (enough said)

“Me and Jesus” - got our own thing going? We don’t need anybody to tell us what it’s all about? I don’t think any church has believed in this, at least not any church with more than one member. Maybe that guy alone on the tropical island used in many an argument?

You know, there are a lot of Modern “Evangelical” songs that I hear which are more Catholic than the “Catholic Songs” I’m sure that a bunch that I haven’t heard are VERY different from what the church teaches though!
Most protestant songs I hear don’t focus much on theological brainwaves, but focus on praising God…something I think many American Catholic songs need to get back to!
God Bless,

Justin

The song “Mary Did You Know?” has been sung at my parish. It contains the following lines:

“Did you know that your baby boy
Has come to make you new?
This child that you deliver will soon deliver you.”

Unfortunately, this contradicts the concept of the Immaculate Conception. If Mary was conceived without original scene, she had already been “made new” and “delivered.” It really irritated me that this was sung – and it didn’t help that the soprano couldn’t quite carry the tune anyway.

What do you think “Rock Of Ages” is? I sang it it the Baptist Church and my Protestant grandmother sang it often as she sat rocking in her chair knitting away. It’s really a Catholic hymn…very appropriate for today since this is the Feast of The Most Sacred Heart of Jesus.🙂

Many Catholics use revised lyrics for “Amazing Grace.”

Instead of “saved a wretch like me”
we use “saved and strengthened me.”

That may clear up some of the theological debates.

You gotta remember where John Newton had come from when he wrote those words. He had been a real wretch, and I suspect that if he had been converted out of that life into Catholicism, he would have had the same sentiments.

Having said that, there’s certainly nothing wrong with “saved and strengthened me.” 👍

I love that song!

I am a wretch. So are most people I know.

The number one most non-catholic song has to be “I’ve got that joy, joy, joy, joy down in my heart.” I couldn’t believe my ears when I actually heard this song at mass. I think its high time we reinstate gregorian chanting as the sole form of song in the mass.

…but remember, there was a time when Gregorian chant was an innovation.

(It happens to be an old innovation that I really love. I usually have a chant CD running all night while I’m sleeping. However, saying that older is better because it’s older is illogical.)

I, too, was once a wretch, wretch, wretch, wretch, down in my heart.

Seriously, the church in Laodicea, is called (in some translations) wretched. Paul called himself the chief of all sinners. Compared to the holiness to which we are called, most of us are wretched. Let us not fear humility.

Slightly off topic here, but there is one evangelical song which I love and have used the lyrics for preparing myself for Confession, along with other examination of conscience materials. It’s Micheal W Smith’s “Never been unloved.”

I have been unfaithful
I have been unworthy
I have been unrighteous
And I have been unmerciful
I have been unreachable
I have been unteachable
I have been unwilling
And I have been undesirable

Sometimes, I have been unwise
I’ve been undone by what I’m unsure of
But because of you, and all that you went through
I know that I have never been unloved

I have been unbroken
I have been unmended
I have been uneasy
And I’ve been unapproachable
I’ve been unemotional
I’ve been unexceptional
I’ve been undecided
And I have been unqualified

Unaware, I have been unfair
I’ve been unfit for blessings from above
But even I can see the sacrifice you made for me
To show that I have never been unloved

Why? I can see why you don’t like it, and why you might not care to have it sung at Mass, but why do you say it is non-Catholic? I have always thought it was a good song for children.

I agree…I grew up with this little song, and still love it. It’s good for all of us, not just children…We should be immersed in Joy…and know that our Joy is in our faith in Jesus Christ.

I’ll come back with the names if/when I remember them, but in the two or three years ago I heard a couple of songs on K-Love radio with lyrics that were strongly sola fide (faith alone). They were played quite often, but I can’t remember the names or artists now.

I like this carol even though it may not be Catholic and shouldn’t be sung at Mass.

I am sure we sing stuff which we shouldn’t but sometimes it is difficult to know. One presumes that the missalette company would be careful about its selections.

While in Catholic grade school prior to Vatican II, we were taught that the Church forbidded Protestant hymns at Mass. Why is it OK now to do so after Vatican II?

GaryTZ,

It is impossible to explain all the errors that have come since Vatican II (not doctrinally but in practice). The Church has never said that these protestant “hymns” are permitted. The closest thing you can find that is authoritative (which it still is FALLIBLE) is in Vatican II. This mentions that the “customs” of the people shoudl be considered in music, including the instruments. However, the Church has never said authoritatively and certainly not infallibly that these “charismatic” and protestant “hymns” can be used at Mass or at all. They are all clearly heretical and protestant in their very nature, whether or not they contain explicit heresy in their lyrics. They all spring from the heresy of protestantism and its music; therefore, all Catholics should shun them as they would the devil himself. Many churches disobey the laws of the Church and of God in this matter and use protestant music at Mass, most especially at teen or “charismatic” “masses,” most noteably at LifeTeen. Your best bet is to find a Traditional Latin Mass (like you had in grade school) where no abuses take place. The Novus Ordo and post-Vatican II mentality is beyond repair. We cannot reform the “reform.” It should be disregarded all together while we return to orthodoxy in the pre-Vat. II mindset. For information on Latin Masses near you go to latinmass.org/directory.html. These are listings only of those approved by the Bishops of these Dioceses (no SSPX or SPPV or independent Masses are listed). God bless.

Just goes to show that any discussion on catholic.com forums is likely to be hijacked by a message declaring the “evils” of Vatican II.

I attend both Latin Mass and English Mass a few times a week. But gee, folks, this thread is a discussion of songs.
There are LOTS of OTHER threads for the discussion of Vatican II, and why it is the cause of everything from West Nile Virus to reality TV to high gas prices and the cat having kittens.

Rather than respond to this whole post, let me point out the obvious problem with it. Heretical in this context means “containing heresy”. One would not say a document or teaching was heretical unless it contained explicit heresy. To show that all protestant hymns are heretical, you would have to list them all (an impossible task) and show that each one expresses at least one heresy(another impossible task). Let’s start small. How about one that you find heretical?
