Hi everyone!
I have a 7 y/o grand daughter living with me who is a voracious reader. ( Like Nanny  ) I want to get her some Christmas books with a Catholic “flavor” but I am not sure what would be good. I have ordered a Catholic children’s Bible but I am looking for "story " books now. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Kathy

I want to highly recommend “One Wintry Night”. It is a gorgeous book. amazon.com/Wintry-Night-Ruth-Bell-Graham/dp/0801038480/sr=8-1/qid=1165148033/ref=pd_bbs_1/104-0577085-5515136?ie=UTF8&s=books

Though it is not specifically Catholic, it is Christian. It is written as an elderly woman telling a boy the story of salvation history. She begins, of course, with creation, then Noah, Moses, Samson, David, Daniel, then Jesus. It doesn’t go into great detail on all of them, but it is a nice overview. The illustrations are stunning.

Another good one is “Jacob’s Gift” about a young woodworking student making the manger for Jesus to lay in.

I got a book for DD when her kids were little which was a collection of “Christmas” chapters from several great children’s books, like Little House (Mr. Edwards as Santa), Little Women “Christmas won’t be Christmas without any presents,” exclaimed Jo.) and my favorite, the chapter from Wind in the Willows in think it is Dulce Domen, several more.
We also had a “LIttle House Christmas Book” that had Christmas stories from all the books in the series, with some recipes, and some biographical material. Not overtly religious but “faith based” as they say.

Are you ready? 😃 This Nona advises:
  • Max Lucado, *You Are Special *and Because I Love You.
  • Walburg and Bernadin, The Legend of the Candy Cane.
  • David Haidel, The Candymaker’s Gift: the Legend of the Candy Cane.
  • Tomie dePaola, Four Friends at Christmas, the Legend of the Pointsettia, Mary the Mother of Jesus, the Friendly Beasts, Angels Angels Everywhere, Tomie’s Little Christmas Pagaent, Pascual and the Kitchen Angels, Francis: the Poor Man of Assisi, Night of Las Posadas, Our Lady of Guadalupe, (and my favorite) the Clown of God.
  • Robinson, Barbara: The Best Christmas Pageant Ever (If she is a good reader).
  • Gloria Houston, The Year of the Perfect Christmas Tree.
  • Cynthia Rylant, Christmas in the Country.
  • Patricia Palacco, An Orange for Frankie, Christmas Tapestry, Uncle Vova’s Tree, Welcome Comfort. WARNING: All Palacco books require a few tissues or a sturdy hankie.
While all of these may not be Catholic persay, they embody Catholic beliefs and ideals.

Any book hard to read for a 7 year old can always be taped or put on a .wav or mp3 file; or better yet, become a “cuddle” book to be read by Grandma. My granddaughters live with me, too, and that’s what we do.

Although it isn’t specifically Catholic, The Christmas Bus, by Robert Inman, would be a delightful read for your granddaughter:

(There is another book, but for adults, by the same name but by a different author.)

This is one of our favorites. It is the animals preparing for the arrival of the Holy Family. Beautiful, simple illustrations.
