Cocaine smuggled in Virgin Mary statues

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Two men suspected of helping smuggle cocaine to New York from Mexico inside statues of the Virgin Mary were arrested Thursday, U.S. authorities said.

Peter Matheis, 52, and Rafael Serrano, 36, both Mexican nationals, were indicted in New York and Houston respectively on money-laundering and narcotics charges along with six others arrested previously in the United States, the Drug Enforcement Administration said.

Five 3-foot-tall statues of the Virgin Mary, filled with 242 pounds of cocaine, were seized in a Brooklyn warehouse as part of the police operation.

The drug ring used the statues to smuggle cocaine worth millions of dollars, FBI agent John Gilbride said in a statement.

The DEA said the investigation was continuing in Mexico.

Lawyers for the defendants could not be immediately reached for comment.

I heard about this over the weekend. What a disgusting thing to do. :mad:
 
People who smuggle cocaine have no respect for anything, if they thought it would help get the stuff in they would put it in statues of Christ, bottles of Communion wine, The Host, anything. 😦

I wonder if they got the idea from “Lost” on ABC? That’s in the plotline.

That’s what I was thinking, although I suspect the Lost writers had heard of similar situations before their show.

Cocaine has been smuggled across our non-existant Southern border in everything. Including young children.
 
okay forget the judgemental part then, they had better see their errors sometime cuz that special place is getting more elaborate and dante-esque all the time.
 
I know this will come off as odd, but hasn’t anyone seen “Romancing the Stone” (and the drugs in the Virgin Mary statues)?

I assume this form of smuggling has been going for decades. It is sick. Although I am not surprised at it, considering the morals of drug dealers.
