In the fall my church is going to have a dinner for all small group members for the purpose of building community. Does anyone know of a great community building activity that we can do with 50-100 people, or do you know of a resource for ideas?

Thanks!

In Christ,
Nancy 🙂

soup dinner…everybody brings homemade soup or something to go with it and just talk…no planned speeches, just good old talk time

Spaghetti dinner and a movie or play night…our church loves this one!

Hmmmmm…cookout and grounds clean up

how bout a christian music concert? Do you have any Christian bands in your area? We are blest that we have the members of the group Sons and Daughters in our parish…

ahh…almost forgot, we have an international day every year where we all cook “ethnic” foods like polish stuff, Italian, hispanic, etc…and we share…we also have games for kids and a big raffle of some sort. One year it was a vintage car…went over well!

Did you notice how they almost all involve a meal and some thing? Works best this way cause after the work is done, feed them and they will socialize…

Well, we are serving dinner so the food is accounted for, but I’m still looking for a community building activity. Watching a movie or listening to a band sounds fun, but it’s not really a community building activity. That’s a planned, specific activity where, by taking part, the people will be/feel more a part of our small groups community. I’m not really looking for just a way to socialize. Sounds also like you’re kinda talking about a whole church gathering. Mine is just for small group members.

Thanks for taking the time to answer though!

paint the rectory

pull weeds and trim shrubbery and do general spring clean up of the parish campus

with assistance of St. Vincent identify 2-3 homes of elderly or disabled parishioners that need work, and with the permission of course of the residents, make repairs, paint and fix-up

ask your DRE for her resources on Seasonal Celebrations or any other inter-generational catechetical programs such as generations of faith. The all have pre-planned activities that provide something for all age levels, and for the group working together.

initiate Operation Rice Bowl, a Work of Human Hands craft show or other activity suggested by Catholic Relief Services to raise money for that organization.

enjoy your meal, then work together to do a thorough cleaning of the parish hall and kitchens.

do a car wash to raise money for CCD supplies, a new chasuble for Father or any other item the parish needs.

make Easter or May Day baskets, and hang them on the doors of neighbors in the immediate neighborhood of the Church, or take them to a nursing home for the residents.
