Are any of you aware of a book by one Christopher Hitchens called The Missionary Position, in which he claims Mother Teresa was nothing but a political opportunist concerned only with spreading an “extreme” version of Catholicism?

It has only now been brought to my attention … is anybody else aware this book (this impression of St. Teresa) existed?

Yes, I am aware of the book but have chosen not to read it. I read an article about Mother Teresa that Hitchens wrote while he was completing the book, and the accusations and rumors he repeated about her were so stomach-churning that I refused to investigate further. For me, deeds speak louder than words. Mother Teresa’s deeds: caring for the ill, the unloved and the unwanted, with no personal reward or gain for herself. Mr. Hitchens’ deeds: throwing as much dirt at a universally beloved figure as possible in the hope that some of it would stick and cause people to buy his book. Which person do you think I’m going to respect more?

Hitchens as written several anti-Catholic screeds and has been against Catholicism most of his life as attested to by his written work as well as interviews. A careful read of his works, including the attacks against Mother Teresa, show his charges are basically groundless. In the investigative period concerning Mother Teresa he tried to convince the Vatican he had evidence against her but was rebuffed as his ‘evidence’ was little more than a personal bias.

I’ve been engaged in a frustrating debate over the good Mother Teresa did on another board. Needless to say, I’ve been doing my best to defend her name.

It’s a shame there is so much hatred felt toward the Catholic Church … and so much of it is based on the simple misunderstanding of Catholic doctrine. If only these people would take the time to really “hear” what it is we believe and why we believe it.

And the ultimate irony is these Catholic haters – who inevitably all proclaim themselves “great questioners” – never actually question their own resentment of the Catholic faith. Rather, they spew blindly the latest trendy version of an “unbiased” attack from an “intellectual” point of view.

Almost as bad as this are the radical traditionalist Catholics who dump on Blessed Mother Teresa as being an “indifferentist,” etc.
