Cloisters

Well-known member
Founded in the 1700s by St. Paul of the Cross, they were originally called “The Poor of Jesus”. The habit was given to them in a vision to St. Paul. Their purpose was to promote gratuity for the Sacred Passion in the hearts of humanity. “May the Passion of Jesus Christ be Ever in Our Hearts” is their motto.

I’ve always said that the friars and laity give hands and feet to the nuns’ Promotion Vow. In addition to the CPO vows, their nuns make a vow of enclosure and the “Promotion Vow”. This fifth vow is what they consider to be their first vow, and that is to promote, through prayer and penance, a grateful remembrance of the Sacred Passion in the hearts of humanity.

The congregation is international, but, like everyone else, their numbers are dwindling.

Given by Our Lady herself!

The letters are Greek for “The Passion of Jesus Christ”. The white outline indicates that the Passion of Christ must dwell in a pure heart.

In the same century, Our Lord also gave the Redemptoristines and Nuns of Perpetual Adoration, respectively, to the world. Additionally, the Sacred Heart of Jesus made Himself known to St Margaret Mary.

One of the Passionist nuns of Erlanger, KY, grew up in the Louisville area (as did some of the others). She told me whenever her family drove past great St. Agnes church, she would see the Passion Sign and knew she wanted to wear it.

Then one of the Erlanger nuns was dying, and her prayer was for a nurse to receive a vocation to their monastery. The aforementioned nun was a nurse engaged to be married, and God made the life overwhelmingly appealing to her. After she broke the engagement, she went to the movies with another guy. Her ex-fiancé saw her, and literally standing in the middle of the busy Louisville street, had his arms out to his sides (like the Peace Sign), exclaiming, “I THOUGHT YOU LEFT ME TO ENTER THE CONVENT!”

This particular nun has been a religious for about 50 years now. She had just celebrated her silver anniversary when I met the community.
