An archbishop accused of the sexual abuse of minors and convicted by a Vatican court “of certain … accusations” was given a place of honor at a recent event attended by Pope Francis. Guam Archbishop Anthony Apuron was seen seated with other bishops and prelates on Saturday at a papal event to mark the 50th anniversary of the Neocatechumenal Way movement, which was founded in Spain. In March, a canonical trial found Apuron, accused among other things of the sexual abuse of five minors, guilty of some of the charges and imposed that he leave his position as archbishop and never return to Guam.

He’s a member of The Neocatechumenical Way and transferred a multi-million dollar property to them before all this went down.

Also, it’s my understanding that the tribunal did not announce what charges exactly he was found guilty of and he has some right to appeal them, so perhaps the Way folks still think he is not guilty. Or maybe the Way supports their big sinners.

I think the whole thing looks bad and if I needed another reason to avoid getting involved in The Way, this would be it.

Why does the Church do this to itself…
That’s the million dollar question concerning the Church under today’s papacy. The Church today has seemed to lost all sense of judgment and concern when it comes to propagating scandal. To be fair, this may have been done without Pope Francis’ knowledge and he may not have been involved with this decision at all. However, when the current leadership in the Vatican appoints abortionists and population control advocates to the Pontifical Academy for Life and invites quasi-Satanists to give talks at Vatican conferences, I’m not keen to give him the benefit of the doubt. This is simply another unforced error on top of the pile.

I think answers are really needed as to why a convicted Archbishop was at a Papal event.
