Hey all,

Having worked for the past couple years at building a reputation as an apologist at the local level by offering apologetics classes, doing talks, and writing a regular column for our parish bulletin, I am attempting to “expand my services”, so to speak.

I’ve been meeting with the vice-chancellor, who offered to “approve” and promote my services, but at the same time, I sort of want to get my information out there. Here’s the text of my letter to area parishes, followed by my list of topics. I’ve come to really appreciate the advice and insight from the rest of you, so I’m waiting to start printing these out until I get some feedback:

Dear Fr. ???:

We are at an interesting crossroad for our Church. Just as it seems a worldly, secular mentality has suffocated much of our Catholic identity, recent years have witnessed the beginning of an amazing return to orthodoxy and spirituality. In addition, as God’s answer to Pope John Paul’s call for a “New Evangelization”, interest in Catholic apologetics is spreading exponentially among the lay faithful.

As a speaker and writer, I have witnessed, firsthand, the powerful effect our Church’s beautiful teachings and history can have on Catholics who are searching for a clear, common-sense explanation for some of our most misunderstood doctrines and practices. From small study groups to filled churches and from audiences ranging from teenagers to adults, I have seen the excitement that comes from gaining the tools and confidence to become a defender of God’s One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church!

Perhaps, in the near future, St. ??? Church is planning to host a mission or educational event. I am writing to ask that you please consider inviting me as a speaker or resource for your parish activity. Enclosed, you will find a flier detailing the various talks available, from motivational presentations to doctrinal explanations.

Highlighted with humor and personal experience, each talk uses common-sense analogies and explanations to deliver an orthodox explanation of the spirit-guided teachings of the Church. In addition, participants leave with resources for taking the next step in becoming effective defenders of the faith.

Please feel free to contact me should you desire additional information. God bless you and your parish.

In Christ,

Spencer Allen

Here’s a list of my topics. Most of the missions I’ve attended around here have been very “spiritual”, such as “How to Pray in a Busy World”. That’s fine, but I wanted to offer something closer to straight apologetics because I think that’s a great, unfilled hunger right now. Do any of the topics seem “off” or ???

Marching orders for the Church Militant** – **Each of us knows a family member or
friend who has left the Catholic Church and dozens more who seem to be drifting away. This inspirational talk aims at revitalizing our Catholic identity and presents effective ways for lay people to share the truth of God’s One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church.

The Divine Vision of the Family** – **A great message for general parish or teenage

audiences, this talk pulls from Scripture and current research to understand God’s design for parenthood and the sacrament of marriage, including the essential steps to a divorce-proof relationship.

7 great reasons to** leave* the Catholic Church* – ***Mass is so boring. The Church *

has such a sinful history. The Pope just needs to get with the times. This unique talk explores the seven most common reasons people give for leaving the Catholic faith and discovers, hidden within them, the seven best reasons to stay!

**Doctrine Talks – **Pulling straight from the pages of Scripture, these talks

provide simple, but effective explanations for these teachings and answer that ever-present question, “Where is that in the Bible?”

  • Some of that old-time religion – a brief history of The Bible and Christianity
  • The Bible, the Pope, and a runner on third – Scripture and Tradition
  • “Are you saved?” and other strange questions – Baptism and Salvation
  • Why everyone must go to confession … and sometimes Purgatory
  • Holy and without blemish - the Eucharist and the Mass
  • The Woman who nursed God - Understanding Mary and the Saints
  • The Church’s backward, old-fashioned teachings on sex
  • When the doorbell rings – Answering door-to-door missionaries
  • Others upon request

**Rates: **Within 50 mile radius of Jefferson City - $65 per talk + mileage allowance

Individualized rates for special events and for distant locations

For local parishes, discounted rates are available for a “series” of apologetic classes/talks
