I went through a long, drawn-out divorce from 1996-98. My ex-wife had at least two affairs while we were married. After being forced out of the house, I eventually started to date. I went through a strong conversion as this all occured and I decided I shouldn’t date until my annulment (Sirach 25:25). As I awaited the Tribunal’s decision, I began dating and we are now married. We both felt that it was OK to date as long as we were willing to stop if the Tribunal decided against us. Any thoughts???

Dear Steven,

Until the first marriage is declared null, the Church considers it valid. Dating a married person is inappropriate and if done with this knowledge it is sinful. Since you did not know this, you are not guilty of such sin.
