Do Catholics and Muslims worship the same God?

I was wondering if the Catholic Church considers that Muslims follow the same God as we do. I understand that they do not believe in the Trinity (and are thus non-Christians), but neither do the Jews and the Church does have a special relationship with them. I know that different religions have various amounts of truth in them and by that token Islam is more like Christianity than Buddhism. I was also wondering if a Muslim would agree or disagree that he worships the same God. I’m not an expert on this so I was hoping someone could help me out.

Thanks!

According to the CCC, the answer is Yes.

841 The Church’s relationship with the Muslims. “The plan of salvation also includes those who acknowledge the Creator, in the first place amongst whom are the Muslims; these profess to hold the faith of Abraham, and together with us they adore the one, merciful God, mankind’s judge on the last day.”

Muslims have a different understanding about the exact nature of God, but worship the same God as do Christians and Jews.

Muslims do not recognize Jesus as the son of God. Thus, if we belive in one God in three forms via the Holy Trinity, how can they believe in the same God?

I think that here there has to be a distinction made between believing in a specific God and believing a particular revelation from God about his nature (3 persons) / accepting that a particular action is truly from God.

The plan of salvation is for all of Gods creation, not because they are muslums,or they are Jewish, but for all of Gods people. 👍

i think the church believes that they worship from the same tradition as we and the jewish people do (i.e. the God of abraham, isaac and jacob) and while a muslim is not outside the possibility of salvation, if they are save it is through Jesus (whether they know it or not). this is an understandle postition (and the one that c.s. lewis held for all the protestants out there), but we have to realize that the characterstics and personality of allah (the god in the q’uran) are very different from what we as Christians would agree with.

Muslims say the worship the same god, but Christians are mistaken about the trinity.

The revelations about God and life from Jesus and Muhammed are very different. There are two distinct and opposite reveleations about life and God. Rather than go on and compare the two on my own (which I have done in the past but was very brief) I ask you to visit dianedew.com/islam.htm to see the difference of the Bible and The Koran. There is no way that Christianity and Islam are equivalent. The only to the father is through Christ, not satain and his servent.

Uh … nobody suggested that they are.

Both religions share a monotheistic view and believe that God has intervened in history via prophets including Abraham, Isaac, etc.

That being said, there are major differences between the two religions.

That does not mean that Muslims do not worship God.

The Catholic position is basically that Muslims have a distorted view of God and that Muhammad is not a true prophet.

According to the Catholic Church (and impartial philosphical analysis), Moslems DO worship the same God. Obviously, what they claim as specifically Islamic revelation is false. But they do accept the fact of only one creator, and they do mean creator as Jews and Christians do.
It’s not God who is wrong, but false revelations (whether J.W., moslem, or etc.).

They pray to a pagan sun “god” . . . last time i checked thats not the Lord thats more like Apollo.

Since Muslims “deny” the Trinity, many people conclude that they don’t worship the God of Christians.

On the other hand, if what Muslims deny is really a caricature of the Trinity, a straw man, like, “Three persons in one person” or “Three beings in one being,” or that the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit are the same person, can we really say they’re denying the Trinity?

I wonder the same thing about practical atheists, who, in their rejection of “God”, might conceive of sour old grandfather with a long beard, sitting on the clouds and throwing thunderbolts. What does their rejection of “God” consist of?

From a Mohammedan perspective they do not hold that Christians and themselves believe in the same God.

The Koran is replete with references to kill infidel Christians and Jews and the holiness of these acts. Moreover, the foremost Imams in the UK, France, Spain, Italy, and Turkey publicly rebuked the “false” notion of Christians believing in the same God as themselves at a conference in Italy (excerpts of which were even broadcast in a piece shown on EWTN) a couple of years ago.

Given that the reason for their disassociation with Christians in a ‘we basically all believe the same’ movement is because of our fundamental belief that God is a Trinity, then it is no wonder that their Imams do not hold that we believe in the same God.

Ask a Lebanese Maronite Catholic family, or, a Palestinian Latin Catholic family if everyday Mohammedans think that they and themselves believe in the same God and you will soon be filled with real life accounts of just how the ‘everyday’ Mohammedans feel about this theory as well. I dare say the same could be said for the Latin Catholic Sudanese in relation to their Arab Mohammedan oppressors.

So, from the Mohammedan perspective they do not hold we worship the same God.

Your unworthy brother in Christ and by the grace of God a future priest,

The god of Islam is a unforgiving god who will punish you for all eternity for any transgression. Their god also condones the destruction of all infidels, meaning anyone who is not Islamic.
I’ve read and recommend reading “The Sword of the Prophet” by Serge Trifhovic and “Islam Unveiled” by Robert Spencer to get a better understanding of the evils of Islam.

I would rather die than worship Allah, and many Christians are doing just that today in Africa and the Middle-East. 😦

You most certainly do NOT worship the same god. Allah never did this Jesus thing, and since for you Catholics Jesus is God (as far as I understand it), God cannot be Allah. Same applies for the Jews, they do not buy the Trinity either. Both do not apply the same attributes to God as Christians do, therefore they worship another god.

In a strict sense even Protestants worship a different god, as their god behaves totally different than yours, e.g. does not listen to prayers conveyed by Saints or Mary, has not setup a purgatory, does not care about baptising (according to some sects), abhors infant baptising (according to some other sects), regards a corpus on a cross as idolatry… You get the picture.

Stating, all people regadless of their religion worship the same god, means, some of those worshippers (or all of them) are seriously mistaken about the true nature of God, which leads to the conclusion, that the true nature of God is incomprehensible. Welcome to the world of agnosticism. I do not think that notion is very Catholic.

my 2ct only of course

From my perspective, I most certainly 🙂 see it this way.

(1) Not all people worship the same god(s);
(2) There are specific basic characteristics attributed to God in Christianity, Judaism and Islam that are non-contradictory. There is disagreement on the specific ‘actions’ taken by God. And in addition, there are, anthropomorphically speaking, differences in perceptions of His ‘personality’ , but not in terms of His ‘basic’ nature.
(3) No 2 Catholics have the same image of God … they agree in terms of basic characteristics, but His exact nature is unknowable and we all have different ‘pictures’ of who He really is.

I don’t know…those last three posts seem to be a misunderstanding.

An earlier post said it well…it is the same God we worhip…but our understanding/interpretation/revelation of the ‘nature’ of God is the thing that is distorted.

We each credit One God as Creator of all things. That can only be The One True God…everything God has revealed to man of Himself is the thing that is jumbled.

The Jews are holding onto God’s early revelations - one of a vengeful, jealous, demanding yet just God with many rules and regulations about how to do just about anything when and where.

The Muslims are holding onto God’s revelation through this Mohammad fellow (who I don’t believe was really a prophet but that’s neither here or there for this argument). Point is Mohammad knew of the Jewish and Christian traditions/history and seems to have used a lot of that as his premise since it too has many, many rules and regulations about how to do everything when and where.

We Christians have accepted the New Testament of God, which was revealed through Christ, and in my humble opinion, is much simpler than the Jewish tradition to get a handle on. It is one of a merciful, loving Father. Following Christ’s example on earth - loving your God, your neighber and yourself - is a lot easier to remember throughout a day to me.

Anywho…those are my thoughts on the subject.

Depends on what you mean by the same God. Since their is but 1 God, when a Muslim crys out to God, he is crying out to our God who listens. If you mean do they have the same understanding of God as we do, of course not. God reveals himself to everyone. We hold that he has revealed himself more perfectly through His Church.
