Someone donated a series of 4 videos to my church. I’m the one who’s taking a look at them, but I’m wondering if anyone knows anything about them. They are from A&E called “Mysteries of the Bible”. The four titles are “The Bible’s Greatest Secrets”, “Biblical Angels”, “Heaven and Hell”, and “Herod the Great”. My first reaction is that being from A&E they won’t be very orthodox, but I could be wrong.

If anyone is familiar with these videos and knows whether or not they would be appropriate for study in a Catholic Church I’d appreciate your feedback.

Thanks!

In Christ,
Nancy 🙂

Best way to know is to look them over and see if there are any miscontrued ideas that are contrary to Catholic teaching. A&E has a tendency to sensationalize some minor details in regards to history, and I would be wary of using them for educational purposes.

If you want something more in line with the teachings of the Church, see if someone could donate Steve Ray’s videos.

A&E had a special promotion a couple of years ago marketing all their bible and religious theme videos to Churches for a set price for the package. I previewed a few of them and found what I expected: when they did use “catholic” experts they invariably quoted dissident scholars and theologians, and the historical content was inaccurate, incomplete and misleading, for the most part. I sent them all back. I am a history buff and keep watching the A&E and History Channels hoping for real history, but all I see is fluff, misinformation, sensationalism and conspiracy theories. The entire A&E network is a complete waste of communication resources in my opinion.
