I wanted to post this as an example of how rumors start. This is supposedly a journalist. Yet with the title, shocking as it is, what surprised me was the gall with which the Pope was misrepresented. When one gets into the article, it reads:
Shortly after the article was published, the Vatican issued a statement that claimed the article was “not a faithful transcript” and that the meeting between Pope Francis and Scalfari was a private meeting and not a formal interview.

“What is reported by the author in today’s article is the result of his reconstruction, in which the literal words pronounced by the Pope are not quoted. No quotation of the aforementioned article must therefore be considered as a faithful transcription of the words of the Holy Father,” the Vatican said in a statement translated by the Catholic News Agency.

The Catholic New Agency also pointed out that, after a controversial 2013 article, Scalfari admitted that some words attributed to the pontiff “were not shared by Pope Francis” himself.
So the journalist made up the words and put them in the Pope’s mouth. In layman’s terms, he lied. In theological terms, he bore false witness.

My first thought upon seeing this was, fake

news and clickbait online.

My second thought, upon seeing who wrote it was, oh yeah. Him again. Pope Francis’ supposed atheist journalist “friend” whose reports about conversations with the Pope often don’t QUOTE him but paraphrase him in sensational ways.

Not sure it was Scalfari in all cases, but more than once, after a Scalfari story on the Pope, Francis or a spokesperson walks the facts back.

Googling Scalfari and the Pope to jog my memory on the specifics.

Is this an early April Fool’s joke? Pope says there’s no hell? A DNC poll will name Nixon “our greatest President” first.

If Jesus is to be believed … there is a hell. But He sacrificed His life to keep souls from going there … and opening heaven to them instead.

Not only is there an eternal hell in the afterlife, a bad dental appointment can feel way too long.

For the older memebers of CAf,perhaps you remember Scalfari.
He writes what he remembers and doesn t tape the interviews. Or meetings. He may take a few notes but it isn t the first time he puts his foot into it with the Pope.
If I can remember that, how is it news outlets use Scalfari’s writings to thrust them agaisnt the Pope word by word, that is what one really wonders.
And…inspite of all his mistakes, how can someone remember interviews like Scalfari does without taking note, well,it is admirable in a way. He is 93!

Be careful next time, use a tape recorder, this is the Pope,Scalfari!

Yes,Captain Fun. He is the same person whom you may remember as he paraphrased.

This is like deja vu. We have been through this before. I think Pope Francis needs to stop giving interviews to this
journalist.

Well, I’m glad to read this… When I heard the headlines… of course they are shocking… But for some reason we can all believe in fake news now…

Subsequent reports make it seem as if no interview even occurred. So the journalist just made it up? That is the best case as the Holy Father shouldn’t be giving interviews to this man.

Hopefully the Holy Father does believe in Hell. Unfortunately many priests and even Bishops don’t. They will skirt around this by saying it may exist but no one is actually in it.

I really hope Pope Francis stops speaking to this “journalist”, if he hasn’t already. It may be that he has stopped speaking to him, so now the guy is resorting to just making up “interviews” out of whole cloth.

Whenever I see some headline that Pope Francis is allegedly refuting some huge teaching of the church, my BS detector just starts going off. it’s obviously clickbait to draw all those people who are sure that Pope Francis is overturning everything they hold dear, which is ridiculous.

Yup. Fake news is all the rage.
Yahoo is not exactly a credible source anyway. They tend to go for the SHOCK value.
Whatevs.

One wonders why the Pope continues to give interviews to this journalist when he repeatedly misrepresents him. It just doesn’t make a whole lot of sense.

Unfortunately not necessarily. As I said many priests and even bishops will say it is possible no one is in Hell. I’d say that is not believing in Hell. If this is indeed a fake interview then there is no need for concern.

Yes. Everyone on this thread is blaming the journalist. But this has happened before. I have to respectfully ask, why does the Holy Father go back to this man?

Yup, twf, there’s really nothing else to say. I guess we just have to ponder that.

In the Apostles Creed we say “he descended into Hell”.

this friend is almost 94. I would think by now the Pope would insist their meetings be taped so as not to create further confusion.

Confusion is the hallmark of this papacy in the sence that it is the hallmark of the Trump Administration, this past election and the state of mind of all that read the internet without discernment.
