My daughter was told in her high school (12th grade) Government class (public school) that if need be a priest in extreme circumstances could use a substitute for the body and blood of Christ to celebrate Mass. Could I get clear clarification on this please. (She did attend 8 years of Catholic School ( very orthodox). I appreciate any help. (Would this be in the catechism?) I’m thinking I may already know the answer.

Dear Beth,

The question isn’t clear. Is the substitute for the Eucharist or for the priest? Would the substitution be for the use of bread and wine? Would the substitute be for the priest in distributing the Eucharist or in celebrating the Mass? Write again and clarify the question.

Fr. Vincent Serpa, O.P.
