 I hope there is someone in the Philippines who can help fellow Catholics answer the attacks of various sects whose continued accusations against the Church have remained unanswered. One of these sects is the so-called Church of God International (Ang Dating Daan) whose website is geocities.com/angdatingdaan21/ . The Catholic Church in the Philippines has not been active in answering the challenges of the said sect to the detriment of her members. Are they afraid to face the challenge of a debate? Perhaps the local Church is too engrossed in politics rather than enlighten her members regarding religious issues?

Hello I checked the website out, it’s anti catholic, but this is my whole point on earlier posts, why if they are sure of their faith, do they expend all their energy attacking the Catholic Faith. Why not ISLAM?MORMANS AND ALL THE OTHER FAITHS.:nope:
I don’t know a single Catholic that ever mentions other Churches, we are too busy minding our own buisness !!!
I won’t waste my energy posting on it, for as soon as they know I’m Cathoic the kick me off, true I have been stopped posting on a few websites :crying: seems they want to preach, but don’t want to be preached too, why bother

😃 Well, your right. I tried to follow some of the links in that website but I was not able to post any reply to their claims. However, this particular sect owns its own TV and Radio station and as such is able to attract many members of the Catholic Faith. the Church here in the Philippines also has TV and Radio programs but they do not answer the accusations of this sect. Yes, indeed the Church maybe too busy with other things but whose going to defend the faith of our members? Why not use the resources that they have and expose the treachery of this sect? I accuse these local Church leaders of timidity and complacency. They failed to look after the flock entrusted to them. Is there a law in the Church prohibiting the leaders from answering back at their accusers? Yeah ,yeah, why bother… :o

Then why don’t YOU do it?

I check the site. Under the Roman Catholic link is just a material from Jack Chick which has been answer satisfactorily by Catholic.com staff (even the tract from Catholic answer specifically adress some of the illustration in that Philipine website borrowed from Jack Chick’s tract)

There are a lot of Catholic apologetic material on the net that could answer stupid accusation about Catholic Church especially the worthless BS from Jack Chick that have zero value even among other anti-Catholic (James White would be insulted if he’s put on the same level as Jack Chick).

My advice to you is to do some research YOURSELVES and pass them on to your Philipino friends.

the Church here in the Philippines also has TV and Radio programs but they do not answer the accusations of this sect.
Start here. With letters and phone calls. Start petitions, etc…

They keep bothering Catholics because its good for buisness and nothing else matters. Taking swipes at the big religion makes sense and brings in converts. To be honest I have had my faith mocked by some Catholics, though it is rare. I do have to mention the bottom phrase, I heard that often, I often believe it when it comes to faith issues.

Hi there,

I’m a Filipino from the Philippines. I’ve been surfing the site for some time now but only got into the forums this May.

Just for your information, the immediate enemy of Dating Daan is the Iglesia ni Kristo (INK) (Church of Christ in English) founded by Felix Manalo. INK is the second biggest denomination in the Philippines roughly 10% of the population. Roman Catholics account for 70-80%.

If you listen to their TV shows and radio shows, chances are you will hear something anti-INK. Of course you will still hear anti-Catholic tirades but this is few compared to anti-INK.

This is because the INK has shown its weaknesses in its doctrines and belief. Their basic beliefs and doctrines are easily contradicted by the Bible. Even their Pasugo , their official publication, even contradicts their faith.

Unlike Catholicism, there is no evidence of contradiction.

So what happens is that Dating Daan has been raiding the ranks of INK. INK has responded in kind devoting half of their TV program to refute and rebutt Dating Daan.

So no need to refute their contradictions. They are doing it themselves. 😃

I’ve been in Cebu, Philippines in the late 90’s, and there is a group there called “Catholic Faith Defenders” headed by Bro. Soc Fernandez. He is a good Catholic Apologist and I’ve heard that he challenged the leader of "Dating Daan."I haven’t heard of the outcome of their debate, but I know for sure it was a good one.

BTW, this “Dating Daan” is just like fundamentalist Christians, I would call it an offshoot of Protestantism in the Philippines. See, in the Philippines there are also Protestants who founded their own church there, so count them as one of the numerous Protestant denominations (made in the Phillipines)😉 all claim to be the “only true church”.

It’s true that “Iglesia Ni Cristo” attacks the “Dating Daan” beliefs. But the INC belief is just like Arianism/JW’s. They don’t believe our Lord Jesus to be God, but only a human being, and their founder is said to be one of the angels of the apocalypse.

Bwahahaha! Oh this is rich… Ahem! Excuse me… I’ve never heard of Dating Daan perhaps because I’ve been here in Chicago too long. But I do know that Iglesia is a joke. Their sermons don’t teach the word of God. Instead they preach how Catholics are wrong, that’s what constitutes their homilies.

It’s so nice to hear about the Catholic Faith Defenders though.

I’m from the Philippines. However I have yet to hear the outcome of their supposed debate.

Yes its true. The Iglesia Ni Cristo (founded in 1914) are modern-day Arians who deny the divinity of Christ and the Trinity and in effect place their founder (Bro.Felix Manalo) as roughly the equal of Jesus. The Dating Daan is actually an offshoot of the Iglesia ng Diyos kay Cristo Hesus, Haligi at Suhay ng Katotohanan, founded around 1936 by Nicolas Perez.

The Conflict between the Iglesians and the ADD is well-known. The Iglesia Ni Cristo and the Ang Dating Daan sects, in tearing each other apart, have each put up television programs specifically aimed at showing the doctrinal inconsistencies and contradictions of each others’ churches.

Actually it is 83 % Catholic.

The Iglesians to their credit, have been doing quite well on that.

I agree.

My impression is that Church leaders, especially the clergy here in the Philippines seem to be oblivious to the doctrinal/theological issues raised by these religious sects, preferring instead to either “turn the other cheek” or just ignore them altogether. I wonder if this is a result of a misguided sense of ecumenism. They tend to be more vocal about “social justice” issues and “government corruption”, but hardly a voice explaining and defending the faith, except for a few devout lay individuals and groups.

I’m based in Cebu, Philippines, and I know Soc personally. He’s now mayor of the neighboring city of Talisay, and it’s been some time since I’ve seen him.

Anyway, the ADD is actually an offshoot of the INC, so it’s only natural that they share some of the INC’s errors. They are also non-Trinitarian and as indicated earlier, pretty fundamentalist.

What’s fun is the attack/counterattack between ADD (on SBN) and INC (on their Net25) channel. It’s really becoming hilarious.

I also enjoy watching Soriano begin yelling and screaming when his debate opponent cites a good Bible verse that refutes his innovative teachings. Makes my day. :))

Peace be to you brothers and sisters in Christ and in the Blessed Virgin Mary!

I’m from and still is in Cebu, Philippines.

As far as I know here in Cebu, the local chapter of the national lay apologetics group Catholic Faith Defenders (CFD) engages in debate with all types of non-Catholic groups every single night–depending on the weather–at the city’s public park.

In addition, the chapter appears regularly in a regular 2-hour local radio program every Sunday entitled “Ang Kamatuoran (The Truth)” where the same non-Catholic groups also show up to debate. It is led by logic, debate and argumentation professor Atty. Marcelo Bacalso, who also has his own local apologetics radio show 2 hours after this one.

Furthermore, there is a fresh local TV program aired by CCTN TV, a recently-launched local Catholic TV station, where non-Catholics are invited to debate with the chapter representatives, usually former Talisay mayor Socrates Fernandez.

We’re just not that visible yet on the Internet.

Now, for the ADD. I really find it strange that, since this group opened a big office here in Cebu (which is about only 80 steps away from the spot in the public park where the debate is held, not one from it participates. Same thing in the radio program. I wonder if it has something to do with the INC being also absent in these events. Hmmm.

Shalom, amen.

The ADD seems to be using Channel 37 now as a “home” base in their war against the Iglesia’s Net 25. Its signal is clearer than SBN 21, at least here in Laguna.

porthos11, preyoflove, et. al.,

Kumusta na man mo, bay? 😃 I’m also a Filipino, and studied in Cebu back in the early 90’s. I am an avid fan of Bro. Soc Fernandez, and I used to listen to his apolegetics discussion in the radio when I was still in the Philippines. Honestly, he and his companions are the best defenders of the faith I’ve ever heard in the Philippines publicly defending the Catholic faith against born-again, and other fundamentalists, JW’s, INC, etc. God bless their ministry in apologetics! Bro. Soc is like a “walking Bible” and he knows how to defend the faith using Scriptures “alone”!

Tell him that he is already known “worlwide.”

God bless you all!

Pio

And I also wish they have a website already and could collaborate with other defenders of the faith. I know there are thousands of Filipinos using the internet, and never doubt there are many Catholics there using the web. I pray that we help each other in promoting this website (catholic.com) to our fellow Filipino Catholics in the Philippines. Let’s defend the faith now!🙂

Btw, Bro. Soc and his companions could use so many articles here (with the permission of Karl). There’s no doubt in my mind, this is a very good source for Catholic Apologetics.

Pio

My mother told me that in the Philippines every church once had a local “Defender of the Faith” chapter. What happened?

My cousin is a priest in Bacolod City and he says there is not much interest in apologetics. That is sad since these Protestants sects are just EVERYWHERE! Whenever I return to the Philippines, I always have friendly conversations/debates with another cousin turned Protestant pastor. My priest cousin just laughs.

Actions are louder than words. Look at what the Couples For Christ are doing in the Philippines.
cfcglobal.org.ph/home.htm
AND tell you protestant friends/family, it was the Catholics who brought Christianity to the Filippinos.

No matter where you are in the world, there is a real good chance CFC is there.

Dear Dhgray,

I have mixed feelings about Couples for Christ. The ones I have encountered here in the US are very well-informed about Catholicism and willing to defend it against Protestant misconceptions. However, the ones I have met in the Philippines have less of such a demanor - they don’t want to stir the waters, more interested in unity with Protestants through the love of the Spirit, than with defending the Faith. Some of those I have met are not even aware that anti-Catholicism exists. They simply see Protestants as brothers and sisters in Christ - nothing wrong with that, mind you, but it should not be so at the expense of Truth.

God bless,
Greg
