The Battle for the Soul of the Archdiocese of San Francisco

| Valerie Schmalz | March 30, 2006

SAN FRANCISCO, March 30, 2006
_ A firestorm of defiance over Church teaching on homosexuality has been ignited following the appointment of George Niederauer as archbishop of San Francisco and a Vatican directive telling San Francisco Catholic Charities to halt gay adoption.

Two Catholic institutions are in open dissent on homosexuality: Catholic Charities, which continues to assert its right to place children with homosexual parents, and the Jesuit University of San Francisco, which has a decades-long history of nurturing homosexual ideology and expressions. Meanwhile, at least two pastors in San Francisco-area parishes not dominated by homosexuals gave sermons **last week supporting adoption by homosexuals. **

http://www.ignatiusinsight.com/features2006/vs_battlesfsoul_mar06.asp
• Two talks attacking Church teaching on homosexuality were held at local parishes in San Francisco, including one on February 12 at the parish of the chancellor of the archdiocese entitled "Queer Perspectives". Both featured openly homosexual theologians and Scripture scholars from Jesuit universities. The second talk, given on March 26, included a Santa Clara University lesbian Scripture scholar describing her sexual relationship as a matter of “grace” that gave “glory to God.” The talks were paid for by the Jesuit Foundation, which is funded by the Jesuit community of USF

• The pastor of the flagship Jesuit parish, St. Ignatius, delivered a sermon Wednesday, March 22, at the 8:00 a.m. Mass and again at the 9:30 a.m. Mass (the parish’s “family Mass”) on Sunday, March 26, saying the Vatican teaching against adoption by homosexuals is not infallible and does not need to be obeyed. Father Charles Gagan, S.J., described the Magisterium teaching as “mean-spirited.” His comments were greeted with applause at the Sunday Mass. Gagan had not returned a call for comment from IgnatiusInsightl.com at deadline.

• According to a Mass goer in attendance, Father John L. Greene, a pastor at St. Monica’s parish, recently gave a similar sermon. Fr. Greene reportedly stated that gay adoption should be allowed by Catholic Charities. Fr. Greene refused to comment to IgnatiusInsight.com.

I read this article yesterday. Very interesting. We live about 50 miles away, in the diocese of Oakland. It always seems to be the Jesuits mixed up with this kind of dissent. Help, St. Ignatius and St. Francis Xavier!

We really need to pray for Archbishop Niederauer. Can you imagine arriving as bishop to lead such a messed up archdiocese? I’m not sure Saint Paul could untangle such a mess.

Sorry, the linked page is gone. I guess they must have taken it off the Ignatius Insight website. I wonder what happened?

You’re right. Are the Jesuits reining in Fr. Fessio? Nobody hates debate like a liberal.

This is exciting; I’ve never seen censorship in real time before.

Hmmm… if the Archbishop ordered this article pulled, it bodes ill for the orthodoxy of the archdiocese, imo.

I could not stay in a parish that was in dessent like that. I will pray for everyone involved.

Aw Man! You are the guys who stole Bishop Vigneron from us. He was the Auxilliary Bishop in Detroit that oversaw our vicariate. He was also rector of our Seminary.

What a great guy.

Did ANYBODY actually copy the entire article?

If so,
please post (I’m not sure of all the rules regarding something like that) or if that can’t happen, it would be great if whomever has it would send it in an email to those who have posted on this thread.

Hopefully, it’s out there somewhere.

and I’m pretty sure there are a couple of sights (Roman Catholic Faithful, Concerned Roman Catholics of America, SOMEBODY) who would post it on their website.

Hello Angels,
I haven’t been able to find it. Steve Ray blogs on it with the same link, which no longer works.
Naif that I am, I emailed Ignatius Insight last Friday and asked what happened to the article. Still haven't heard back

Hello Brendan,
Thanks for training him for us. As you might imagine, urban Oakland has it's own issues which make it challenging. Those of us in the more conservative hinterlands were ecstatic when he was named. Our previous bishop ... had imbibed too strongly of the "spirit of Vatican II", imo.

If you were asked how you got the opinion that the Jesuits had a lot of homosexuals enrolled in their seminaries or supported homosexual “rights” what would you say?

I’ve read articles like this and have even known a Jesuit who was a homosexual (he later dropped out of the seminary).

What other types of articles/information could I give someone who is doubting the “rumors” that the Jesuits are full of homosexuals?

Go to Santa Clara University website and read some of the articles in the student newspaper. There are MANY anti-catholic articles, damning church documents and church teachings on people with homosexual disorder, abortion, birht control and homosexual priests.

Then do a search on LGBT on their website. - they have a group that has coming out parties, drag nights, - photos and all on the school website. You’ve gotta figure something’s going on in the heirarchy for them to continue to allow this.

"Question 3.
I’m gay and I haven’t found any other homosexual guys at school that are attractive. The guys that usually attract me are straight ones. What can I do to find guys who are gay that are straight acting?

**Question #3 **

Abby senses you may be frustrated by the lack of available men that you generally find most attractive. Your question is a good one because it is not uncommon for many gay men to place a high premium on masculinity when they are searching for a sexual and/or romantic partner. This can be particularly true in the first years of “coming out” and before establishing a wider-circle of diverse gay friends and greater comfort level with all forms of gender expression. The value that is placed on masculine traits is learned from our society … Regardless of sexual orientation, … I wouldn’t doubt that many of your “crushes” have been on heterosexually identified men because there are simply more of them out there among your peer group at SCU and many gay men remain “closeted” while in college.

***To find a man who is best suited for you, …or a LGBT geared club/organization at a larger university in the Bay Area (SJSU, UC-Santa Cruz, Stanford, Berkeley etc.) or in an urban setting like San Jose or SF. You can start by stopping by the next GALA meeting that will resume spring quarter most Wednesday evenings at 6P in Daly Science 317. Here’s their web site info.: **http://www-acc.scu.edu/clubs/GALA/homepage.html. *

*You may also want to contact or visit the BillyDeFrankLGBTCommunity Center (408-293-2429). UC-Santa Cruz also has a GLBTResourceCenter (831-459-2468) that you may want to check out. It may require some effort and patience, but it’ll all be worth it if you find that special guy. *

This is insanity coming from Santa Clara (Jesuit) University on their website.

Something is DEFINITELY wrong.

Same sex attraction is a “disorder” , per the Catechism of the Catholic Church. It must be addressed and treated and, if possible for this particluar person, CURED! (for “curative” theology, medical and scientific evidence on this please get “Confronting the Gay Agenda” by Deacon Bob McDonald
saintjoe.com/p/prod_desc.pl?id=915

IT IS A DISORDER. It IS NOT “NORMAL”.

Hope these links help.

Wasn’t aware that Santa Clara was run by the Jesuits. I’m quite shocked  at these websites. This is suppose to be a Catholic University???

**I’m shocked at  what’s on these links. It’s hard to believe a Catholic University would allow this stuff on their website :nope: . How can they present this University as Catholic  ? These activities (Queer Abby) and clubs are telling these young adults to embrace the homosexual lifestyle. This is not right. What can be done about this who can we write? **

Angel, you should start a thread on this.

This is another post from a Jesuit University - John Carroll University in Cleveland.

If this is the result (and look at how it’s worded!)
then, what could they possibly be teaching there?

Again, this is from their official website.

jcu.edu/studentl/vpsa/assessment/IssuesOfDiversity.pdf

GLBT SUPPORT

Open-mindedness and support for the gay, lesbian, bi, trans-gendered community (GLBT) have reached all-time high percentage levels. John Carroll has seen a steady decline in the importance “to have laws prohibiting homosexual relationships” from 27.5% in 1996 to 23.3% in 2000…

The John Carroll community is taking steps toward the existence and awareness of diversity at John Carroll, yet there is still much to be done. **Jason Christie, a senior Religious Studies major and also an openly gay student at **Students For Same Gender Marriage JCU Students Who Support Laws John Carroll, offers a simple solution. "To rectify the situation, it is going to take a lot of communication and a lot of patience. Two very simple solutions to combat very difficult subjects and attitudes. We need to get over our fears and approach our immature beliefs with mature attitudes."
