I will be very surprised if this council comes to pass. I think some of the patriarchs have already weighed in against the convening of such a council. We discussed this a few years ago:

Great and Holy Council, 2013?
.
.
No, his link was to the USCCB’s fraternal suggestions for the very council we are talking about, which were made by a committee back in 1977. Preparations have been underway for that long. Not because it really takes that long to plan, but because getting all the Orthodox churches to agree has been like herding cats.
Thank you for the correction! That makes sense.

AsiaNews reported yesterday that there has been agreement to hold the synod in 2016. I am still a little skeptical, and I haven’t found any other reports on this topic, but AsiaNews is usually reliable.
The “sacred and great” pan-Orthodox Synod will be held in Istanbul in 2016 at the Cathedral of St. Irene. In the meantime, the Orthodox Churches, a Preparatory Commission - composed of a bishop from each church will begin preparatory work “in a fruitful manner” for the meeting . The same group will then serve as the secretariat during the meeting. This was decided by the Synaxis , the meeting of all the heads of the Orthodox Churches, gathered at the initiative of the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I…
According to some reports, the great Synod of the Orthodox Churches will be attended by 20 bishops from each Church (if each church has that many), every church will have a single vote during the final voting , decisions will be taken by consensus (ie, by the unanimous vote of the Fathers present).

I know what they are going to do at this council.

They are all going to announce submission to the Bishop of Rome, His Holiness Pope Francis, and fold their Churches into the Catholic Church.

Now I’m sorry I said there’s no sense of humor of this forum. 😃

I wonder if this will be the Orthodox version of VII?
Eek…my GOARCH pastor does talk in favor of altar girls - he says although it’s never been done there is nothing specific that forbids it. Of course, he’s never once attempted to bring in one of his daughters or another girl to do it.

Depends what you mean.

We aren’t looking to get the Church ready for the modern age - as VII was doing, however like VII we do have some major issues that need to be addressed by everyone, although that comparison stands for most councils.
